From April 11 to 15, Carman Collegiate welcomed Randy Guest in as a resident Artist in the School. His workshop is called 'The Language of the Camera'. Mr. Guest teaches filmmaking to students, focusing on the organic, grassroots principles of the art form. Frame', "cheating in the frame", turning parts of the classroom into any world you want your "audience" to believe they've been taken to; all of these principles are explored, and then physically applied, in a grade user friendly way. Kids are taught and assigned crew positions, with industry professional language and dynamics, and then become their own "mini-film crew" on their own "set" in the classroom, and around the school. With a focus on process over product, Mr. Guest is leaving the kids and the school with sustainable skills that would allow them to be able to make their own movies on a basic camcorder or device of their choice.
Thank you to The Manitoba Arts Council for supporting this program, both in the creation, and also by heavily subsidizing the artists who come to our school, making this program affordable.
