Miss Teen Southern Manitoba

Congratulations to Sierra W. who was crowned May 11 as Miss Teen Southern MB. She competed in the provincial pageant and was one of five who were chosen to move forward to Nationals. Nationals are hosted the week of July 19th in Toronto. As a title holder Sierra has elected to take the first steps towards a leadership role in and around her community as a volunteer. Each delegate is selected based on personal accomplishments, goals and commitment to community service. She has been an active leader in the school’s Philanthropy Group from its inception. In order to maintain a spot in Nationals each delegate is responsible for raising adequate funds for an organization called Free The Children. Free The Children is an international charity that believes in a world where all children are free to achieve their fullest potential. Free The Children informs, educates, engages and empowers youth to become active local and global citizens. To support Sierra as she raises money for this organization she invites you to attend her fundraiser at the Active Living Centre on June 11 from 7-9pm. 

Health Experience Day

May 29 saw our grade 11 Biology class take part in our first ever health experience day.  Our students circulated around town.  At the Memorial Hall, they received information on concussions; how they occur, diagnostic tools and many other relevant pieces of information.  At Carman Pharmacy, the students took part in some hands on activities with determining safe medications and pill packaging among other things. At the hospital, our students heard from Blood Services, explored imaging systems in the lab, and had the opportunity to experience what a patient with Alzheimer's may experience.  In the afternoon, students had a presentation on nutrition and selling practices by food stores, followed by them cooking up some healthy meals.  The day also had a focus on possible jobs in the health fields.  A great day with our first ever Health Experience Day.  Many thanks to our many organizers, Carman Pharmacy, and the staff at the Carman Hospital.
    

The Romans are Here!

The Grade 8 students enjoyed a "Roman Games/Feast Morning" on May 30 as a culminating activity for their Ancient Roman Unit in Social Studies. After planning, designing, and creating board games about Ancient Roman Civilization for the last two weeks, the students dressed up into their togas, and in groups played the variety of diverse, entertaining, and educational games. In Roman style, the students then enjoyed partaking in a "Roman Feast" of foods common to Ancient Roman meals, with a few improvisations. Thank you to all the students for the food, and for an enjoyable morning stepping back into Ancient Times!

Envirothon Provincial Competition

Five students (Madi S, Katie T, Rhiannon A, Bailey G, Kara M) participated in the Envirothon Provincial Competition in Brandon this weekend.  This 3-day event, included an outdoor field test, where students tested their environmental science skills and knowledge, after taking part in training sessions put on by experts in the fields of Forestry, Soil Science, Aquatic Ecology, Wildlife Management and Sustainable Agriculture.  We enjoyed beautiful weather and would like to thank La Salle Redboine Conservation District for sponsoring our team!

Snowbirds coming to Carman

Captain Morgan Strachan, a member of the Canadian Forces Snowbird Aerobatic Team for 2014, will be flying over Carman on June 3 (tentatively at 2:00 pm), and then present to our students on June 4.  He was born and raised in Carman attending both Carman Elementary and Carman Collegiate graduating in 1997. He enrolled in the Faculty of Agriculture at the University of Manitoba graduating with a Bachelor of Science in Agriculture in 2001. Following graduation he worked with CIBC and it was during this time that he became interested in flying, enrolling in lessons and obtaining his private pilot's license at Harv's Air in Steinbach, Mb. Morgan joined the military in 2004 where he received his wings on the CT-155 Hawk in 2007. He was selected to the Snowbird Team in 2013 and brings 1800 hours of flying military high performance aircraft to the Snowbird Team. He flies the #9 position in the formation and is one of two members performing solo aerobatics in the show. For the 2014 season the Canadian Snowbirds will perform 50 shows across North America flying as far north as Yellowknife, N.W.T., as far east as Stephenville, N.L., as far south as southern Missouri and as far west as Redding, California. Manitoba’s only Snowbird performance for 2014 takes place June 4th at Portage La Prairie (Southport).

University of Manitoba Spring Presentation 2014

Grade 12 students that have been accepted at U of M for the Fall of 2014, attended a Spring Presentation on May 26, 2014 at Carman Collegiate.  Excellent information was provided to the students in regard to undergraduate programs, university transition, preparation checklist, aurora course registration system, mobile appmobile app technology, financial support, on campus events, pre-orientation and university expectations.  It was a great opportunity for graduating high school students to prepare for their future post-secondary experience.  Thanks to the U of M for providing this university experience.

The Carman Collegiate Senior Drama premiere production of "The Groom has Cold Feet" started this afternoon in front of a packed Carman Collegiate Community Theatre audience of grade 5 to 10 students.  The cast and crew will open their public performance tonight starting at 7:00 pm.  Their second and only showing goes on Sunday at 2:00 pm.  Come out and enjoy a great show.  Tickets are still available at the door.

Health Experience Day

On Thurs, May 29, the Biology 30 students will be participating in a Medical/Health Careers Exploration Day at various locations around Carman.  Twenty-five of our Biology 30 students will be at the Carman Hospital, the Carman Pharmacy, and the Collegiate interacting with health professionals in a variety of medical areas (lab technician, doctors, pharmacist, dietician and others).  Grade 10 animation students will be producing a commissioned video of the event.

MADD Canada presents SMASHED

MADD Canada is coming to Carman Collegiate on Tuesday, May 27.  Smashed is the story of teens Kelly, Natalie and Pete. Three young friends heading to a typical school dance. Natalie has a huge crush on the very popular yet incorrigible Johnny, who tells her he'll meet her there. But as it turns out, Johnny has been drinking and is turned away from the school dance. He invites Natalie and her two friends to a private house party instead and while Kelly and Pete don't want to go, they do so because Natalie is so insistent. The party is in full swing when they arrive. Many of the teens are drinking and smoking pot including Johnny. He entices Natalie to drink; she has way too much and is no longer in control. When Johnny leaves the party to get some more pot, drunken Natalie makes the terrible decision to go with him. Her friends do everything they can to stop her from getting into his car, but fail. Kelly calls 911 and she and Pete follow in her car. What happens next is a deadly twist of fate that nobody could predict.

"The Groom Has Cold Feet"

The Carman Collegiate Senior Drama Production is almost upon us.  The cast and crew have two showings coming up next weekend.  The opening show is on Friday, May 23 at 7:00 pm, and then they are hosting a Sunday matinee show starting at 2:00 pm.  The show is open to all the public.  Tickets can be purchased prior at the school office, or at the door.  Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for students.

International Day Against Homophobia

The International Day Against Homophobia, held on May 17 every year, is a rallying event offering an opportunity for people to get together and reach out to one another.  Promoting and endorsing an environment in both our school and community that is free of all types of hatred is our focus.  May 17 is designated International Day Against Homophobia as this is the date that the World Health Organization took homosexuality off the list of mental illnesses.  At the school level, one of our initial goals is to eliminate the use of homophobic comments that have become too common.  A simple, but very hurtful example is the use of the term "that's so gay".  There are many other adjectives that can be used that are not as offensive - i.e. that's so yesterday.  All our involvement in making our school a more welcoming place for all is greatly appreciated.  For more information on this event, please visit http://www.homophobiaday.org/.

French Culture Day

Students join the band to make some great music!

As part of the Provincial and Divisional French Revitalization initiative, all grade 10 to 12 students taking Basic French in the school division met in Carman on Friday, May 16.  Students enjoyed a French concert performed by “les têtes de violons” (violin heads) which had many of our students up on stage playing a variety of instruments.  After the concert, students were bussed to the Community Hall where they took part in miniature workshops / presentations on magic, make up, games, and music.

National Day of Honour - May 9, 2014

The Government of Canada has proclaimed May 9, 2014 as a National Day of honour in recognition of Canada's military mission in Afghanistan.  Approximately 40,000 Canadian troops served in Afghanistan during the 12 year mission.  During this time, 158 Canadian Armed Forces personnel were killed, including seven Manitobans.  Please recognize the contributions and sacrifices made by members of the Canadian Armed Forces, and to recognize and support the families and friends of the fallen.

Let's Talk Science Challenge

On Friday, May 2nd, twelve grade 8 students (Kim N., Zach R., Ashley H., Waedon D., Alex C., Matt D., Raina A., Mercedes M., Geoff H., Jason V., Jeffrey H., Paris T., (and Hannah P.)) participated in the Let's Talk Science Challenge" at the U of M. where they competed against over 50 teams across Manitoba and over 3000 students across Canada. The day consisted of a "Science Quiz Show" consisting of over 40 questions in the morning and a "Design Challenge Project" in the afternoon. The students enjoyed the format of the day as well as the challenges they faced in categories of Earth Science, Biology, Math, Chemistry, Physics, Engineering and Technology, Environmental Science, Space Science, and in the designing and building of a self-propelled gondola with just minimal material.

For the last three months, the students have spent time during noon hours and after school reviewing material and preparing for this challenging, exciting, and knowledgeable day.

Holocaust Presentation by Author Kathy Kacer

Carman Collegiate's grade 9 students were honored to have been a part of Canadian Children's Book Week on Monday, May 5th when the collegiate hosted Toronto author Kathy Kacer. Ms. Kacer is the author of over a dozen novels, each focusing on the Holocaust. Kacer's own mother who went into hiding as a teenager in the former Czechoslovakia, and her father is a survivor of two concentration camps. Ms. Kacer shared with the students the story of her mother in Gabi's Dresser, who hid from SS soldiers in a dresser as they ransacked her family home looking for her, and its sequel, The Night Spies, where her mother's entire family went into hiding in a farmer's hayloft. Ms. Kacer's presentation included images of her family and places her stories occurred. She continues her book tour throughout Manitoba for the duration of the week.

New Traffic Sign

The Department of Highways and Infrastructure have allowed Carman Collegiate to pilot the new crosswalk sign that you will see located in the middle of the highway during lunch and immediately after school.  Although we are not considered eligible for a lit crosswalk, this new sign has made the crosswalk by the Collegiate more noticable to motorist.  Between the sign and the 30 kph speed limit, the act of crossing the highway is much safer for both our students and community members.

Band Aid Annual Performance coming May 10

Carman Collegiate’s Band Aid will return to the Active Living Centre this year on Saturday, May 10 from 7 p.m. to 12 a.m. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. Tickets for the all ages rock show are $5 in advance,  $7 at the door and $20 for a family pass for two adults and two children. Tickets are available at the Carman Collegiate office or you can reserve them by calling (204) 745-2001.
Band Aid, now in its seventh year, will return to its roots this year as a fundraiser for Carman Collegiate. Ticket sales after expenses will go toward mobile sound and lighting equipment to decrease costs for future shows.  There will also be a silver collection for the Carman Collegiate Philanthropy Group.
“In the past rock band students have raised funds for various causes. With the dedication shown by our school’s philanthropy group it made sense to support their work,” said Ms. Armstrong, who with Mr. Rivest, supervises the school’s rock band.
A new group this year, Carman Collegiate’s school rock band is made up of Allan D on drums, Tyson S on bass and guitar, and Darren U on guitar. Paris T and Abby R share vocalist duties.
 The band is supported by a group of students who helped raise funds to stage Band Aid this year by holding a coffee and bake sale. The students will be helping with set up on the day of the show and assisting in the making of homemade pizza (led by former student Amanda McGill). The pizza, along with water, pop and coffee will be for sale at the event.
Returning to the Band Aid stage this year will be members of the school’s former rock band, Conspiracy Theory. Drummer Jeremy S, who graduates this June, now plays with two of his former bandmates, Evan Dracass and Braden Kauenhofen in the band Quicksand. Tianna W, a Carman Collegiate Grade 11 student, handles bass duties for the band.
Other musicians will be taking the stage in a Band Aid alumni group that includes former Frequency, Free Kittens, Mind Over Matter, and Talent Whack members. Colin Hay, Luke Anseeuw, Jeremy McGill and Joel VanKoughnet are among the former Band Aid performers taking to the stage. Luke will also be playing in his own band, a trio based out of Oak Bluff.
“Band Aid gives our young rock band members a chance to play on stage with a full sound setup while allowing some of our former Band Aid performers to join their friends on stage again. The idea is to give young people a chance to enrich their lives through playing music. Anyone who has been involved in Band Aid will tell you it’s a lot of fun,” said Ms. Armstrong

Envirothon

On Wednesday, April 23, three teams of 5 students participated in the Regional Envirothon Competition at Pinkerton Lakes Wildlife Refuge, near Treherne.  This outdoor event involved students learning about wildlife, soils, forestry, aquatic ecology, and sustainable agriculture from local experts.  In the afternoon, teams participated in the Field Test competition, where they completed a number of hands-on challenges.  Although it was a rainy day, students had a great time in a picturesque setting!  Competition results will be announced next week and the Provincial Competition will be held in Brandon, May 22-24.

Pop Charts Concert Tops the Charts!

The Carman Collegiate Senior Band gave a fantastic performance on Wednesday, April 16.  Our students took the audience for a tour of current top 40 hits.  Our technicians also had the opportunity to show off more lighting abilities that our theatre is capable of.  The crowd also had a special treat when Mrs. Phillips, Mrs. Armstrong, and Mr. Rivest performed "Under Pressure" on Ukuleles.  A great evening was had by all.

Course Selection Informational Session

Attention grade 8 to 11 parents.  Wednesday, April 30 will see us hosting our annual Course Selection Informational sessions.  Grade 8 parents are invited to join us at 7:00 pm in the theatre for information on the grade 9 to 12 credit system and details regarding grade 9 courses.  This will be followed at 8:00 pm with an informational session for grade 9 to 11 parents regarding grade 10 to 12 programming.

Formal Dance rescheduled for April 24

The date for the Formal Dinner and Dance is April 24. Student Council will be selling tickets from Monday, April 14 - Thursday, April 17 to anyone who wants a ticket.  Formal tickets are $20 for dinner and dance, or $8 for just the dance.  Tickets purchased for the February formal dance that was cancelled are still valid.

Carman Collegiate Pop-Charts this Wednesday!

A great week for the Arts in the Carman Collegiate Community Theatre.  Please join the Carman Collegiate Senior Band as they perform their Pop Charts series.  Show time is Wednesday, April 16 starting at 7:00 pm.

Philanthropy Group Presents Money at Foundation Gala

Representatives from the Carman Collegiate Philanthropy Group attended the annual Carman Area Foundation Gala on Thursday April 10^th. Sierra W. and Emilie P. attended the banquet and presented cheques on behalf of the group to Boyne Regional Library, Carman Memorial Hospital, Carman Seniors Resource Center, Child and Family Services of Central Manitoba Foundation, and Sperling Community Club. Total donations were $4500.00 to go along with $200.00 of funding provided for the Christmas Cheer Board earlier in the year. It is the most successful year in the group’s 4 year history thanks in large part to the partnership created between the Carman Area Foundation, the Thomas Sill Foundation, and Carman Collegiate. The six year agreement will result in $15,000 in community funding and the creation of a Youth In Philanthropy Fund within the Carman Area Foundation.

Chance 2 Grow Plant Sale on Now

Mr. Shindle is selling plants (Strawberry Wine Petunia Fuseables) in support of the CFS Foundation’s “Chance 2 Grow” fund. The fund pays for underprivileged children to participate in a range of activities that may otherwise be out of reach financially. These activities include music lessons, art classes, dance lessons, and athletic programs among others. Our grade 10 science students had a fun-filled day at the Ian N Morrison Research Farm in Carman on Thursday, April 11.  The 5th annual Agroecology Discovery Day included students from Carman, Miami and Elm Creek.  They learned about various agroecology topics including soils, weather, entomology, water monitoring, and weeds from local community experts.  Various hands-on activities took place, such as water quality testing and weather data collection.  Thanks to all our sponsors for a great day!

Young Women's Conference

On Thursday, April 10th, five grade eight girls (Ashley H, Mercedes M, Mackenzie B, Amber U, and Gabrielle M) attended the Young Women's Conference at the Red River Community College, a conference for young women to learn about trade and technology careers available in today's employment market. The conference highlighted different vocations in trades and technology, introduced the girls to women mentors working in these fields (such as the keynote speaker, Jessica Lloyd, the chair for the Winnipeg Construction Association's Women in Construction group and project manager for Bird Construction), and provided employment and career planning information. This was followed by a tour/hands-on activities of the trades where the girls were brick-laying, changing tires, building electrical devices, and numerous other activities. The girls were impressed and excited about the career opportunities available for women in the trades, and thoroughly enjoyed the informative day.  

Recording Program on the Air

Several students involved in the PRSD Recording Program did a station tour in Winkler this past Monday and took in some voiceover production sessions. Our students were interviewed on air by 93.5 FM the Eagle about the recording program. Carman Collegiate students involved in this session were Tayler M, Jeffrey Z, and Brett U.

Carman Collegiate Community Theatre - The Final Tally

The theatre amounts have been finalized.  This project has been a major community and school success.  Every aspect of the Carman Collegiate Community Theatre has been completed, and completed beyond the standard first envisioned when school administration made the initial proposal to the PRSD Board of Trustees in February 2012.  And to add to that, the theatre financial contributions have balanced our expenses.  Here are the numbers:

Varsity Boys Basketball Repeat as AA Provincial Champions

At the MHSAA AA Provincial Boys Basketball Championships this past weekend, our own Carman Collegiate Cougar Varsity Boys repeated as provincial champions.  The boys faced the Boissevain Broncos in the Gold Medal game.  After being up by as much as 16 points in the third quarter, the Broncos made a push, pulling within 3 points in the final quarter.  However the Cougars pulled it out at the end with an 83 to 72 victory. 
Tim D was named game and tournament MVP.  Mason M was named to the tournament all-star team.
This completed an incredible 23 and 0 season for the Cougars, and moves them to 34 consecutive wins going back to last year.

Report Card Time

Grade 7 and 8 report cards will be sent home on Friday, March 21.  Grade 9 to 12 reports with attendance updates and a list of courses with teacher names will be sent home, and a specific request for a student conference should there be concerns in the course.  Reports will be sent home both by paper copy with the student and by email.

Student Conferences will take place on Monday, March 24 from 6:00 pm to 8:30 pm and on Wednesday, March 26 from 12:00 pm to 3:00 pm.  The student conferences are open to all parents and students to attend.

It's a boy!

Congratulations to Mrs. Rheault and her husband on the birth of their son, Parker Henry Rheault on March 13th at 10:55 pm.  All are at home and doing well.

Free the Children Coin Drive Fundraiser

We have an eager group of gr. 9 students that are working together to improve the lives of children around the world.  Their goal is to raise $2000 to build a school in Haiti. Tyson S, Brynne R, Savannah W, and Reggie S just finished their first fundraiser and it was a success! Their goal was to raise $500 and if met the winning grade would get to duct tape Mr. Lang to the wall! They raised $ 572.86 and the winning grade that raised a total of $ 172.25 was the grade 8’s! In the near future, we will be attempting to stick Mr. Lang to the wall! Anyone wanting to join the group and help out with our next fundraiser just talk to any of the students mentioned or Mrs. Thompson or Mrs. McCullough.

Grade 10's attend Career Symposium

As a Career Initiative Carman Collegiate grade 10 students attended the Rotary Career Symposium in Winnipeg on March 19.  The symposium provided an excellent opportunity to explore a variety of career options, and provided a dynamic venue of more than 200 exhibitors, 70 speakers and experts.  It is the largest and most comprehensive career symposium in Western Canada, created to showcase valuable educational opportunities, leading industries, and employment in Manitoba and beyond.

Your children and teens are 'digital citizens', well versed in the operation of all sorts of technology.  But are they safe?  How do you, as parents, help them navigate this information highway?  Carman Elementary School and Carman Collegiate are pleased to invite you to join Graham Milliken, Educational Coordinator with the Canadian Centre for Child Protection, on Wednesday, March 19 from 7:00 pm to 8:00 pm at the Carman Collegiate Community Theatre for a presentation on parenting in the digital world.  All are welcome to attend.

Pasta Night coming March 20th!

The Philanthropy Group is hosting its first ever Community Pasta Night along with a Movie (“Nut Job”) on Thursday March 20^th. The pasta dinner will be served in the gym and includes spaghetti with Bolognese, Alfredo, or Tomato sauce along with tossed salad and dessert. Cost for dinner is $14.00 for adults and $10.00 for children 12 and under. There is a $2.00 discount on dinner with the purchase of a movie ticket. Movie tickets are $5.00 per person or $15.00 per family. The plan is to feed 150 people on a first come first served basis between the hours of 5:30 pm and 8:00 pm. The movie will begin at 7:15 pm in the Carman Collegiate Community Theatre. All proceeds from the event will be donated to projects in the community as selected by the Philanthropy Group. This year the group has already donated $4700.00 to local initiatives.

 

Four for Four! What a Season!

Our SV Cougar Girls Basketball team completed the sweep on Tuesday evening, capturing the Zone IV title defeating Morris 62 - 40.  After only being up 5 points after the half, the girls had a big third quarter to put the game away.
The win marks the first time in Carman Collegiate history that we have owned all four Zone IV titles (JV Girls, JV Boys, SV Girls, and SV Boys) in basketball at once.  Both our JV teams won their inter-zone games to qualify for provincials.
Our Junior Varsity Girls and Boys travel to provincials this weekend.  The girls will be in Morris and the boys in Dominion City.  Our girls enter the tournament ranked 6th overall and play Friday morning at 9:00 am.  The boys are ranked 4th and also play at 9:00 am on Friday.  Go Cougars!
The Senior Varsity teams leave next Thursday for their provincials.  The girls will be Teulon and the boys in Warren.

Welcome Jaylyn Sigurdson to our teaching staff starting Monday, March 10,  Mrs. Sigurdson will be teaching in the grade 8 area, taking over from Mrs. Amanda Rheault who is now on maternity leave.  All the best to Mrs. Rheault and we will keep you up to date once baby arrives.

Carman Students Score Big at Boeing Meet

Three of our students competed at the Boeing Meet in Winnipeg last weekend, breaking a few records in the process.  In the Bantam Men category, Ethan C finished first in the 300 m run, and set a new record in the process with a time of 40.86.  Ethan finished second in the 800 m.  His second place finish also broke the 2008 meet record by over three seconds.

In Midget Men's competition, Alex C finished 12th in the 800 m and 9th in the 1200 m.
Jay O continued with his gold medal and record breaking paces.  Jay finished first in all three of his races: 800 m, 1500 m, and 3000 m.  Jay set new records in the 800 m (1:56.14) and the 1500 m (3:59.76) for the Boeing Meet, and was named the Male Athlete of the Meet.

Family Movie Night

Over 120 people came out and enjoyed "FROZEN" last night, our biggest movie night yet.  Thank you to all who supported the Philanthropy group last night.  Their next event is on Thursday, March 20 when you are invited to come out for dinner and a movie.  A delicious pasta dinner followed by "Nut Job" should be marked onto your calendars.  More information to follow next week.

Cold Weather

The Carman Collegiate grade 9 to 12 Formal Dance scheduled for this evening has been postponed due to the extreme weather forecast.  We are looking at a new date in April to have the Formal Dance. 
The cold weather has also resulted in us postponing the JV Basketball Zone IV finals scheduled for tonight (Feb. 28) to Monday, March 3 when the boys host Morris at 5:00 pm, and the girls travel to Morris for a 5:00 pm start. 

Family Movie Nights are Back!

 




Family Movie Nights are back starting this Thursday, March 6 at 7:00 pm.  The Philanthropy Group is pleased to be presenting "Frozen".  Entrance is $5 per person, $15 per family, and popcorn and water are $1 each.

Your children and teens are 'digital citizens', well versed in the operation of all sorts of technology.  But are they safe?  How do you, as parents, help them navigate this information highway?  Carman Elementary School and Carman Collegiate are pleased to invite you to join Graham Milliken, Educational Coordinator with the Canadian Centre for Child Protection, on Wednesday, March 19 from 7:00 pm to 8:00 pm at the Carman Collegiate Community Theatre for a presentation on parenting in the digital world.  All are welcome to attend.

Learning and Working at Carman-Dufferin Fire Hall

Carman Collegiate students Janessa W, Mark K, Dylan V, Austin B and Ryan O are Career and Technology interns at the Carman Dufferin Fire Department. Janessa says, “It is hard work but she is enjoying the experience, especially how it is hand-on and real.” The internship program is designed to provide students with a sample in all areas of development and training required to be a firefighter.  The program includes classroom sessions, hands on training and attendance at monthly training and meetings at the fire hall.
Career Technology Studies allows grade 11 and 12 students an opportunity to get an introduction into a variety of career paths and students can obtain high school credits. Students in the program also gain valuable practical experience in a particular career prior to entering their post-secondary studies. The students are supervised and evaluated throughout their internship. 
Chad Yeo, firefighter and mentor said, “It is a good experience to be able to work with the students.  They are excited about learning”.  Expectations of the students are the same as for other fire fighters.  There is an emphasis on safety and procedures.  Carman-Dufferin Fire Department has participated with the Safe Workers of Tomorrow training audits for Dufferin Christian School and Carman Collegiate students. Chief Vanderzwaag has also been a guest speaker during the safety training sessions, sharing his experiences and how the fire department addresses safety.
Career and Technology Studies internships act as a stepping stone to a career path.  Janessa who has participated in Career and Technology Studies program since October, says that her future plans are to pursue a career working as paramedic and perhaps continue her involvement with the Carman Dufferin Fire Department.

Carman Collegiate goes Hollywood Glam

Student Council is hosting their annual Formal Dance on Friday, February 28 at the Carman Community Hall.  Dinner is at 6:00 pm and the dance goes from 7:00 pm to 10:00 pm.  Tickets are available up to Monday, February 24, 1:30 pm.  Prices are $20 for dinner and dance (must be pre-purchased) or $8 for the dance (tickets available at the door).  This event is open only to grade 9 to 12 students.  Students attending only the dance must be signed in by a parent.

Arctic Science Day

Several of our senior high students were accompanied by Ms. Massinon on an Arctic Science Day at the Fort Whyte Centre on Friday, February 21.  Fortunately for them, the weather cooperated to give them a true Arctic experience.

Public Budget Consultation Meeting

Prairie Rose School Division is hosting a Public Budget Consultation Meeting on Monday, February 24 at 7:00 pm in the Elm Creek School Science Lab.  Parent Advisory Councils, members of municipal councils, staff, students, and general members of the public are encouraged to attend.  This is an opportunity to provide input into programs in our schools and the education of our children.

Canadian youth do more to protect their reputations than their information when they go online

Ottawa, ON (February 19, 2014) – Canadian youth worry about their online privacy and take steps to control who can see what they post, and more importantly, how other people see them, according to new research released today by MediaSmarts.

 

The not-for-profit organization surveyed over 5,400 students in classrooms across the country on their Internet behaviours and attitudes as part of its Young Canadians in a Wired World study. Online Privacy, Online Publicity, the second report from the survey, looks at the strategies young people use to control how they are represented online and how they protect their personal information.

 

Even the youngest students surveyed are sharing a substantial amount of information on social media sites. While students are willing to post information about themselves and their personal lives, the majority employ strategies to protect their privacy, including not posting their contact information, using a different identity, using privacy settings to block strangers, deleting something they posted or asking someone to delete something posted about them.

“While students have developed a number of strategies to help them manage their online reputations and stay safe, the research also shows that there are gaps in young people’s knowledge of online privacy,” says Cathy Wing, Co-Executive Director of MediaSmarts. “Their limited understanding of geo-location services, privacy policies, data collection practices and password sharing issues, suggests we need more effective privacy education, both in homes and schools.”

Key findings include:

·         97% of students would take steps to remove a photo they don’t want others to see.

·         68% mistakenly believe that a site with a privacy policy will not share users’ personal information with others.

·         59% would share the password to their social networking account, email account or cell phone. Girls are much more likely than boys to share their passwords.

·         The percentage of students who misrepresent their age online to register on a site rises from 18% in Grade 4 to 65% in Grade 11.

·         28% say police should be able to read their social media posts.

·         Parents are students’ main source of information about online privacy protection.

·         89% say it’s wrong for a friend to post a bad or embarrassing picture of them, and more than half think it’s also wrong for a friend to post a good picture of them without asking first.

Post Secondary Information Days

Grade 11 & 12 students attended the annual info days at Red River College and the University of Manitoba on February 19 and 20.  Students participated in faculty presentations, tours, mini-university lectures, as well as, engaged in conversations at the Information Village of booths from each faculty to obtain publications, and speak with faculty representatives.  A great career opportunity!

Graduation 2014

The Graduation 2014 initial parent / student meeting will take place on Wednesday, February 19 at 7:00 pm in the Carman Collegiate Community Theatre.  Agenda and information can be accessed by going to http://carmancollegiate.pbworks.com/w/page/68182971/Graduation%202014.  Discussion will include the basic structure of the graduation, Safe Grad, committee formation, and other details around graduation.  Our new photographer will also be on hand to distribute information packages and answer any questions.  This meeting will be approximately one hour and is a great way for our graduation class and parents to get a better sense of the grad planning process.

Student Voice

Superintendent Terry Osiowy and Assistant Superintendent Ron Sugden will be meeting with 18 of our grade 7 to 12 students on Tuesday.  They are taking the opportunity to travel to all the schools to meet and hear from students regarding what they see as their needs for their education and their future ambitions. 

Post Secondary Information Days

Our grade 11 and 12 students will be travelling to Winnipeg on Wednesday and Thursday next week to the Post Secondary Information Days.  Wednesday will see students travel to Red River College to get a sense of that campus and programs that are offered.  Then on Thursday, students will get the opportunity to visit the University of Manitoba. 

The Blue Man Group

Congratulations to "The Blue Man Group" composed of Jourdan B, Alecia I, Madi S, and Katie TM for being featured on the front page of The Manitoba Technologist (The Official Publication of the Technology Professional).  They made the front page for being awarded the Best Construction Award at the 2013 Model Wind Turbine Competition back in November.

Great Weekend of Basketball for our Cougars

Silver for the girls and gold for the boys.  A great weekend for our Senior Varsity Cougar Basketball teams.  Our girls required an overtime win over the Elm Creek Cobras (46-41) to advance to the finals.  Our girls then pushed the Treherne squad to overtime in a back and forth match in the gold medal game.  Treherne eventually came out on top with a 56-54 win with our girls receiving silver.  Madi S was named game MVP and Janessa W was named tournament MVP.
The SV Cougar boys faced the Ste. Anne Lynx in their final.  After a close first half, our boys pulled ahead in the third quarter, and claimed gold with an 85-42 win.  Mason M was named game MVP and Tim D was named tournament MVP. 
Be sure to come out and catch more great basketball action as our Junior Varsity Boys host their tournament on February 14 and 15.  Action starts on Friday at 1:00 pm with our boys.

A Right Way to Protect Kids

The new speed limit in front of Carman Collegiate and Carman Elementary were visited by the Headingly RCMP traffic unit on Thursday.  A substantial number of tickets and warnings were issued during the course of that day.  The largest ticket came in just under $1000 for doing just over 100 km/h in the 30 km/h zone.
A recent article in the Valley Leader (February 6, 2014 edition, p. 6) feels the Town of Carman got it wrong in their approach to protecting our students.  The answer comes down to 30 seconds.  That is the additional time it now takes to travel through the 30 km/h zone in front of the Collegiate.  The issues regarding the two schools are different.  Carman Elementary needs the reduced zone due to their playground being split in half by the highway.  With children using the play structures and grounds at all times and year around, it makes sense that the new speed limit be in effect at all times.  Carman Collegiate was having issues with vehicles not yielding to pedestrians at the crosswalk.  Since the speed limit has been decreased, drivers are more aware of their surroundings, and there has been improvement with the rate of vehicles stopping for pedestrians at the crosswalk.  The Collegiate has events that take place on all days of the week and weekend, and at any time of the year.  Pedestrians use the crosswalk as this leads from the Collegiate to both businesses, the Sunnyside residential area, and during large events our overflow parking.
Travelling 30km/h in this day and age may feel like a snail's pace, but an additional 30 seconds onto our travel time is worth keeping everyone safer.  To the Town of Carman, thanks for getting it right.  Also note, the RCMP Headingly traffic unit have stated that they will be back. 

Basketball Action!

Our girls started off our Cougar Basketball tournament with a 60 to 32 win.  They play Saturday morning at 10:30 am at the Carman Collegiate gym.  Our boys are currently at half with a solid lead over Rosenorte and will play tomorrow at 12:00 pm at the Collegiate.  Come out and cheer our girls and boys on.  Go Cougars!

Remembrance Day

Congratulations to Kolton T. for being awarded first place in the Remembrance Day poster contest in the Intermediate Black and White Category.  Kolton received his certificate in January. 

An Entertaining Week Coming Up...

Hockey, an MTC production, great basketball action, or a host of events next weekend with Blizzard Fest, there is no shortage of things to do, regardless of your interests.  Miami is hosting their annual Hockey Day in Canada, and our Cougar Hockey team is starting off the festivities by hosting the PCI Trojans.  Puck drops at 7:30 pm Friday night at the Miami Arena.  Tuesday has GPAC hosting the MTC production "Miracle on South Division Street" at the Carman Collegiate Community Theatre.  Showtime is 7:30 pm.  Then next Friday is the start of the SV Cougar Boys and Girls Basketball Tournament.  Our girls start off the tournament at 1:00 pm, followed by our boys at 2:30 pm.  And inbetween basketball action, be sure to check out the many Blizzard Fest events happening around town on Friday and Saturday.  Stay warm by staying busy!

Invitation to Attend an Industry Career Presentation

The Mid-Canada Marine and Powersports Dealers Association will be hosting their annual career presentation during the 2014 Boat Show.  The 2014 Career Presentation will take place on Friday, February 28th at 1:30 pm at the Winnipeg Convention Centre Theatre.  Students and parents are welcome to attend to learn more about the career opportunities available in this industry.  All attendees will receive free admission to tour the Boat Show and view the newest boats, motors and personal watercraft on the market today!
This presentation will provide students and their parents with some insight into the career opportunities and apprenticeship options available within the marine and powersports industries.
The Marine and Outdoor Power Equipment Technician trade is an exciting, dynamic and challenging line of work.  If your students enjoy boating, snowmobiling or quading, are mechanically inclined, like power and like to repair their own power sport equipment, they could turn their passion into a career.

Ag Days

Our grade 8's travelled to Brandon on Thursday to attend the Brandon Ag Days Event.  Our students were first involved in a presentation giving them a global realization of urban and rural population trends.  The students then toured the many different booths, having the opportunity to explore the diverse range of careers in agriculture.  Our students were very respectful, asked lots of questions, and had a great day.

Cougar Hockey Team Earn Silver

Zone IV hockey teams captured the top three spots at the 45th Annual Carman Collegiate Cougar High School Hockey Tournament.  Our Cougar Hockey team made it to the Gold Medal Final Saturday night against the Morden Thunder.  The Cougar's advanced to the final with two decisive victories earlier in the tournament.  They started off Friday morning with an 8 - 0 victory over Glenboro, and then followed in up with an 8 - 4 win over Hamiota that evening.  The final saw Carman go down 2 - 0 early in the game before settling down defensively.  Our Cougars could not overcome a stingy Morden defense that only allowed one goal in the tournament.  The Mountain Mustangs defeated Hamiota 5 - 1 to capture the Bronze Medal.  Thank you to the organizers, volunteers, and our many sponsors for a great tournament.

45th Annual Cougar Hockey Tournament

Our Cougar hockey tournament was delayed by 12 hours, but our Cougars started off well with a big opening game win this morning.  They next play at 7:15 pm, hoping to punch their ticket through to the finals Saturday evening.  Go to the sports page for more information.

Cool Jewelry made in CHD class

Grade 10 & 11 Clothing, Housing, and Design students participated in a Chain Maille Jewelry workshop on January 10th, 2014. Julia Hamm, a grade 12 student from Riverton, Manitoba taught the class a short history lesson on the evolution of chain maille. She then lead students through the steps and techniques needed to complete a "European 4 in 1 bracelet". Check out Julia's amazing work on her webpage at www.bonniemaille.com !

The Canadian Centre for Child Protection is committed to providing Canadians with age-appropriate information and resources to help educate parents / guardians about how to keep children safe.  They have created a new website with excellent resources to help with the following increasing common issues:

• Steps individuals can take to remove inappropriate pictures from the internet.
• How to get help when needed.
• How to cope with a difficult online situation.

Get Your Yearbook!

The deadline to order your 2013-2014 yearbook is less than a month away. Please place your order at the office before Feb. 1. The cost is $40. We need to know how many yearbooks to order by then because the covers are pre-printed. 

 

Design of the yearbook is already underway and will be a 112 pages full of photos and memories of this school year. You can check out some of the photos in the library in our yearbook corner.
