On Thursday, April 10th, five grade eight girls (Ashley
H, Mercedes M, Mackenzie B, Amber U, and Gabrielle M) attended the Young
Women's Conference at the Red River Community College, a conference for
young women to learn about trade and technology careers available in today's
employment market. The conference highlighted different vocations in
trades and technology, introduced the girls to women mentors working in these
fields (such as the keynote speaker, Jessica Lloyd, the chair for the
Winnipeg Construction Association's Women in Construction group and project
manager for Bird Construction), and provided employment and career planning
information. This was followed by a tour/hands-on activities of the trades
where the girls were brick-laying, changing tires, building electrical devices,
and numerous other activities. The girls were impressed and excited about the
career opportunities available for women in the trades, and thoroughly enjoyed
the informative day.
