The International Day Against Homophobia, held on May 17 every year, is a rallying event offering an opportunity for people to get together and reach out to one another. Promoting and endorsing an environment in both our school and community that is free of all types of hatred is our focus. May 17 is designated International Day Against Homophobia as this is the date that the World Health Organization took homosexuality off the list of mental illnesses. At the school level, one of our initial goals is to eliminate the use of homophobic comments that have become too common. A simple, but very hurtful example is the use of the term "that's so gay". There are many other adjectives that can be used that are not as offensive - i.e. that's so yesterday. All our involvement in making our school a more welcoming place for all is greatly appreciated.
