The Carman Collegiate Cougar JV Boys Volleyball team captured the MHSAA Provincial AA title on Saturday, November 26. After finishing 4th in round robin action, the Cougars faced the number one ranked Steinbach Christian Flames in the quarter finals. After dropping the first game, the boys came back to win in three (17-25, 25-14, 15-4). The semi final saw them face their Zone IV rivals, the St. Paul's Barons from Elie. After dropping their first game, the boys scrapped back to capture the match with a gutsy three set win (18-25, 25-22, 15-13). The boys, with the win, advanced to the final against Rossburn Collegiate. Once again, the boys dropped the first game, and were on the verge of elimination in game two, but battled back from being down 24-18 to win game two. The boys continued to fight and finally won (22-25, 31-29, 15-11) Carman Collegiate's first JV Boys Volleyball championship. Over the last 5 years, the JV Boys program has captured a silver in 2012, a bronze in 2014, and now gold in 2016. MPI Friends for Life Presentation
On Friday, November 18, our school welcomed Amanda Stuhl Oling to present to our grade 7 to 12 students. Amanda’s presentation combined her own heart breaking personal story with her expertise from a 15 year career in law enforcement. She expertly described how the crash changed her and her family’s lives forever, impacted at least two communities, affected the impaired driver’s family and friends, caused financial hardships, and even broke up friendships. All this because a 19-year-old made the wrong choice – to drive after a night of drinking. Amanda did not reveal until near the end of her presentation that it was her father who was killed that night, which makes this presentation even more unique.
Students at the end of the presentation were allowed to sign a Friends for Life poster that is now hanging in our main hall.

Book Donation to JA Cuddy
Carman Collegiate Grade 7 students Coltyn P, Lexie N and Lily P delivered 614 books to JA Cuddy School students in Sanford on November 1.
The students organized a campaign to collect books for students displaced from the elementary school in Sanford because of a fire this summer that caused damage to their school.
The Carman Collegiate students would like to thank the community for their support including Carman Elementary school students who donated books at their school and to Boyne Regional Library patrons who dropped off books at the town library.
JA Cuddy School Principal Scott Thomson, Librarian Lori Dufresne and some JA Cuddy students were on hand to receive the books.
"These JA Cuddy students represent all of our school in thanking you," Thomson told the Carman students.
Dufresne said with the books and similar donations, including through the Indigo Adopt a School program, the school now has enough books to add to each of their temporary classrooms and to expand the school library, including replacing damaged books, when the school re-opens. Half of the school is expected to re-open in the coming weeks.

In 2011, I attended WE Day with Carman Collegiate. I will never forget that day because that day changed my life forever. The atmosphere and environment at WE Day is indescribable. It’s so inspiring. WE Day inspired me and gave me the opportunity to start making a difference in the world. I have participated in many of their local fundraising programs that support local and global communities. I loved being at WE Day so much, that I knew I had to come back. So I started volunteering there. This year will be my fourth year volunteering at WE Day, and I have enjoyed every minute of it. But this WE Day will be extra special, because I have been asked to speak on stage! The organization emailed me and told me that they have recognized my dedication and passion for their organization, and they would like to speak on stage. So on November 18th, I will be speaking at WE Day Manitoba about my volunteering experience and I why I’m passionate about their organization.
I will also be talking about the ME to WE volunteer trip that I’m going on next year. I will be going to Kenya, Africa in May 2017, and I will be there for approximately 20 days helping with development projects that break the barriers to education. I have always wanted to go on a volunteer trip to Kenya, and now I can while supporting a charity that I am very passionate about!
I’m very excited for both of these events, and I appreciate any support! If you would like to support me, I do have a variety of fundraisers planned for the coming months. I currently am selling Rafiki Bracelets which are beaded bracelets, and they are hand-made by African Mamas. By purchasing one these bracelets, you support the African Mamas, and my trip. I am also offering my photography services where all the proceeds are going towards my trip costs as well. If you are interested in my photography services, please check out my website: www.stephaniejolenephotography.com or my Facebook page Stephanie Jolene Photography. Donations are also graciously accepted. If you are interested in supporting me, or have any questions for me, please feel free to contact me at sdoerksen03@hotmail.com. Thanks!
A select number of Carman Collegiate students will have the opportunity to attend WE Day this year and hear Stephanie as well as many others.

Author Kevin Sylvester Visits Carman Collegiate
| Mrs. Plaitin with author Kevin Sylvester getting books signed for our library. |
He told students that in order to be a writer it's important to be curious about all subjects. He talked about the research he does for all of his books including his series about Neil Flambé, a fourteen-year-old famous chef who also lives a secret life as a detective, code-named "The Nose."
Kevin Sylvester also read from his book, MiNRS which tells the story of space miners on the planet Perses.
Using triangles and circles as examples, the author and illustrator showed how drawing is based on math you would learn in geometry class. He advised students to never erase what they may think are mistakes in their drawings but rather work those "mistakes" into their art.

It’s got to keep going without me.” We as a caring school community need to keep Terry’s dream alive. Please collect as many pledges as you can before next Friday. Let’s surpass last year’s total of $1198. We can do it! Your support is greatly appreciated.

First Days of School Presentations
Presentations were made to all grades on our students return to school by Mr. Phillips. Taking the time to explain our school goals and student expectations of behavior are always important to establish at the beginning of every school year. As has been posted in our community report, our school goals for this upcoming year still focus on four main areas. These areas include:
Students who are able to thrive in these four areas have been shown to have greater resiliency in life.
Our code of conduct was also reviewed. Our five positive expectations include:
- Be present and on time.
- Strive to do your personal best.
- Have respect for yourself.
- Have respect for others.
- Have respect for the environment.
Following these basic expectations will allow our students greater opportunity to have success at achieving our goals, and there for be more successful in their life paths.

Vice Principal Announcement
Welcome to Mr. Jeffrey Latimer, our new vice principal starting in September 2016. Mr. Latimer is finishing up as the vice principal/physical education
teacher at Roblin Elementary School in Roblin, Manitoba. He is completing his
fourth year in that position. Prior to that, Jeffrey was a physical
education/academic teacher for 4 years at Goose Lake High School.Farewell and Thank You
With the closing of the school year, we take this time to say thank you to staff members who will not be returning to us for the upcoming year. Their dedication to our students over their time here is very much appreciated.
Mrs. Monica Halbesma has been an educational assistant with us for the last several years. She has accepted a one year position at the division office, and will hopefully rejoin us for the 2017 - 2018 school year.
Ms. Suzy Kotelniski joined our staff in February teaching grade 7 and 8 French, taking over from Mrs. Rouire who had moved into the VP role.
Ms. Lisa MacPherson started the school year as our half time grade 7 homeroom teacher. In January she became full time, taking part of Mr. Shindle's teaching duties when he was appointed Principal at Roland Elementary. Ms. MacPherson coached the JV Girls Volleyball team and the Girls Fastpitch teams.
Mr. Rob Chalaturnyk has been teaching grade 7 with us for the last six years. He has done a lot of work with our students doing science experiments that have created a sense of wonder and awe. Mr. C has coached the boys soccer team over the years.
Mr. Garth Shindle started teaching at Carman Collegiate as a student teacher with Gord Johnson and Malcolm Jones. After a short stint teaching in Altona, Mr. Shindle was hired as the grade 7 teacher (replacing Mr. Johnson) in 2003. He taught in the grade 7 area for seven years before being hired as the vice principal. Mr. Shindle was then moved to Roland School in January 2016 as the principal for a one year term, before he was to return back to Carman Collegiate. Opportunity however knocked, and Mr. Shindle accepted the vice principal role at the Morden Middle School starting September 2016. Mr. Shindle coached hockey and baseball (and many others) and was instrumental in reviving the Athletic Banquet. He also was the staff advisor who started the Carman Collegiate Youth in Philanthropy.
All the best to our departing staff members in their future endeavors.
