Family Movie Night

A great showing last night as we had 190 people attend the Youth in Philanthropy's Family Movie Night presentation of "Finding Dory"  The next show will be on Wednesday, October 12 when the Philanthropy groups brings in Johnny Depp in "Alice Through the Looking Glass".

Author Kevin Sylvester Visits Carman Collegiate

Author Kevin Sylvester visited Carman Collegiate on Wednesday, September 28 to speak to students about writing and illustrating.
He told students that in order to be a writer it's important to be curious about all subjects.He talked about the research he does for all of his books including  his series about Neil Flambé, a fourteen-year-old famous chef who also lives a secret life as a detective, code-named "The Nose."
Kevin Sylvester also read from his book, MiNRS which tells the story of space miners on the planet Perses.
Using triangles and circles as examples, the author and illustrator showed how drawing is based on math you would learn in geometry class. He advised students to never erase what they may think are mistakes in their drawings but rather work those "mistakes" into their art.

Terry Fox Run

Carman Collegiate students and staff took part in the 36th annual Terry Fox Run to support Cancer Research on Friday, September 23.  Over 300 strong, we took to the walking trail at 11 am under very sunny skies.  This is the 17th year that Carman Collegiate has taken part in the Terry Fox Run.

Students brought in funds totaling $1504.20.  If students still have pledges at home, we will still collect early next week.  Winnipeg Jets jerseys were awarded to our top fundraisers.  Congratulations and thank you to Kim N, Hannah B, Juliette S and Erika P.

Terry Fox Run - September 23, 2016

Our annual Terry Fox Run will be held next Friday, Sept.23^rd.   It was 36 years ago that Terry Fox started his Marathon of Hope. He had hoped to cross Canada and raise money for cancer research. Unfortunately Terry Fox could not finish the marathon, but as he said “Even if I don’t finish, we need others to continue. It’s got to keep going without me.” We as a caring school community need to keep Terry’s dream alive. Please collect as many pledges as you can before next Friday. Let’s surpass last year’s total of $1198. We can do it!  Your support is greatly appreciated.

Open House and Awards Evening

Carman Collegiate hosted their annual Open House and Grade 9 to 11 Awards Evening on Thursday.  The Awards ceremony recognized academic excellence for our grade 9 to 11 students from the 2015 - 2016 school year.  Awards were given out for individual courses, as well as the Honour Roll (80% average) and Honours with Distinction (90% average).  Congratulations to all our award recipients.

Carman Student to perform at Canada's Walk of Fame Emerging Event

Faouzia O was born in Morocco and raised in Carman MB. This very talented 16 year old has been chosen as one of Canada's Walk Of Fame Emerging Artist Music Mentorship Program winners. She will perform at the Canada's Walk Of Fame event live in Dundas Square in Toronto September 24th.

Family Movie Night is Back!

The Carman Collegiate Youth in Philanthropy group are back and hosting their first movie of the new school year.  Join us on Thursday, September 29.  Movie starts at 7:00 pm, but show up early to get your drink and popcorn.
Cost is $5 per person or $15 per family.  Come out and support a great cause while enjoying the movie.

Student Council Memberships for Sale

Student Council will be selling student memberships until Friday September 23. The membership fee is $10.  There are several benefits to purchasing a student membership: student members receive a student card, discounted admission to dances and a free pancake breakfast. They are also helping Student Council raise money to fund the various student activities throughout the year.

Gr. 7's helping out JA Cuddy

Recently J.A. Cuddy School in Sanford had a fire that damaged their school including smoke damage to the books in their library.  Three grade 7 students, Coltyn P, Lily P, and Lexie N, have decided to collect books so the students have something to read. They will be collecting books for a month. The books can be dropped off at the Carman Collegiate Library. Please make sure the books are gently used and appropriate for a K-8 school. Thank you for your support.

Allergy Reminder

Please note that we do have students and staff with allergies.  Some of these allergies are life threatening.  We ask that students and adults not bring the following items to school:

• Peanuts or peanut butter,
• Seafood (fish or shell fish of any type),
• Scented perfumes or deodorants (we have asked students to use stick deodorants, not spray when at school).

Your cooperation in adhering to the above is greatly appreciated.  

It's a Gym Riot!

Our student council started our year off with a gym riot on Friday afternoon.  A great way to get all of our students united in some great team building activities.  Over 200 students took part in a variety of races and challenges.

Join us Wednesday and Thursday evening.

Our annual Open House and Grade 9 to 11 Awards Night is taking place Thursday, September 15.

Our Open House starts the evening at 7:00 pm in the Theatre.  We will introduce our teaching staff, and present to you school information.  At 7:30 pm we will open up our doors so that you can have a look around and mingle with our teaching staff (and check out the gym).

Our Grade 9 to 11 Awards will then take place back in the Theatre starting at 8:00 pm, recognizing the academic achievement of our grade 9 to 11 students in the 2015-2016 school year.  All are welcome to attend this evening of celebration.

First Days of School Presentations

Presentations were made to all grades on our students return to school by Mr. Phillips.  Taking the time to explain our school goals and student expectations of behavior are always important to establish at the beginning of every school year.  As has been posted in our community report, our school goals for this upcoming year still focus on four main areas.  These areas include:

• Achievement - the motivation to work hard and attain excellence. 
• Altruism – the motivation to help and be of service to others. 
• Belonging – the opportunity to establish trusting connections. 
• Independence – the opportunity to build self-control and responsibility.  

Students who are able to thrive in these four areas have been shown to have greater resiliency in life.

Our code of conduct was also reviewed.  Our five positive expectations include:

• Be present and on time.
• Strive to do your personal best.
• Have respect for yourself.
• Have respect for others.
• Have respect for the environment.

Following these basic expectations will allow our students greater opportunity to have success at achieving our goals, and there for be more successful in their life paths.
