Grade 9 to 12 Report Cards Home Today

Grade 9 to 12 report cards will be emailed home today between 2:30 pm and 3:00 pm.  A paper version will be given to students at the end of the day for them to take home.  The final page of the report has the "Completion of Requirements for Graduation".  Please pay special attention to the "Credits Required for Graduation" and the "Total Credits Earned to Date" columns as these two must equal for compulsory credits. 
Grade 9 students will want the number 1 in the "Total Credits Earned to Date" by the end of the year.  Grade 10 students will want the number 2, grade 11 students the number 3, and grade 12 students the number 4 in that column.  Students must be taking the missing course in this semester in order to achieve their credit requirement by the end of June.  Graduation requires a minimum of 30 credits, of which a minimum of five credits must be at the 30 level and the 40 level.  If you have any questions regarding the information on this page or any others, please feel free to contact us at the school.

RBC Olympian Presenting

We are pleased to welcome RBC Olympian Colin Mathieson to our school on Thursday morning as a start up to the Carman Community BlizzardFest activies.  Colin's message is that achievement comes from recognizing the opportunities around you.   Colin's message focuses on the importance of redefining your capabilities while reminding yourself of those who supported you along the way. 

Colin has competed on the Canadian national team since 1995. Colin has competed in four Paralympic Games 1996,2000,2008, 2012 with a medal in 1996 in the 4x400m relay. In addition to his Paralympic accomplishments he has also won 3 bronze medals from the IPC World Championships (2002, 2013) and a silver medal from the 2006 IPC European Championships in Helsinki. Colin also holds several Canadian Championship titles from 1994-2014.  Colin is from Winnipeg.

Yearbook Deadline is February 2!!!

Yearbooks must be ordered this week in the school office.  We have a February 2 deadline to declare how many books we want printed.  Do not be disappointed, buy your yearbook on Monday.  Cost is $40 and cheques can be made out to Carman Collegiate. 

Second Semester starts February 2

Grade 9 to 12 final exams are complete and the second semester begins on Monday, February 2.  Grade 9 to 12 report cards will be sent home on Friday, February 6.  We plan to email them home at 2:00 pm, and hand out the paper versions at 3:30 pm. 

Ag Days

Carman Collegiate Grade 8 students travelled to Brandon on Thursday for the Manitoba Ag Days.  The students were one of many schools to visit the exposition that highlights agricultural production expertise, technology, and equipment that attracts exhibitors and visitors from across Canada and North Central United States.

The day started with the students being given an introduction into the population distribution on the different continents, how many people live in the urban vs the rural areas, percent of land used for agriculture, and the percent of food consumed and produced by the different regions of the world.  The students then headed for the Keystone Centre for the afternoon of finding information.  Students were divided into groups and given questions to answer.  Each group had to answer 20 questions at 20 different locations.  Not only did the students cover a lot of ground, they also learned of the great diversity of occupations connected to agriculture.  A great day was had by all.  Many thanks to our parent volunteers for leading groups through the exhibition centres. 

Carman Students Promoting the Boyne Regional Library

Carman Collegiate animation students have been working on a video for the Boyne Regional Library board.  The intent of the video is to promote the expansion of the library. The proposed expansion would include the addition of more space to allow for more programs to be offered such as children’s activities, meetings and classes. The students also interviewed community leaders and students about the importance of libraries and literacy.  Students involved are:  Allan D, Matthew K, Dawson E, and Jordan P. 

Family Movie Nights

Our Philanthropy Group hosted two movie nights over the last week.  On Thursday, January 15 they hosted the movie "Big Hero 6" and then last night they hosted "Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day".  Almost 150 people came out to the first movie, and about 85 people attended the movie last night.  The "Big Hero 6" turnout was the biggest movie night to date, and gave the Philanthropy Group a great leap on their fundraising campaign for local charities.  Thank you to all for coming out to our movie nights. 

Cougars Win!

The Carman Collegiate Cougar Hockey team captured their home tournament for the first time since 2007, defeating the Mountain Mustangs in a very exciting final Saturday night.  The Cougars came out of the first period tied at a goal each.  In the second period they gave up two before responding and entered the final period down 3 - 2.  The Cougars came into the third period on fire, and scored another four unanswered goals.  Looking to have the game well in hand, the Mustangs came back with two goals in under 20 seconds.  The Cougars were able to finish the game with a late open net goal to capture the tournament title with a 7 to 5 victory.  Scott O led the come back with a pair of third period goals. 

46th Annual Cougar High School Hockey Tournament

Check out the high school hockey action this weekend.  Gold Medal games goes Saturday at 7:00 pm.  Cougars play Friday night at 7:00 pm with hopes of punching their ticket to the gold medal game.

Exams

Grade 9 to 12 Exams are approaching.  The exam schedule for January and June can be viewed at http://carmancollegiate.pbworks.com/w/page/85648873/Exams. 

• Math 40 Provincial Exams take place from January 20 to 22. 
• Grade 9 to 12 school exams take place from January 26 to 29. 
• The last day of regular semester 1 classes is Friday, January 23.
• There is no school on Friday, January 30.
• First day of second semester classes is Monday, February 2.

Grade 7 and 8 students have regular classes throughout the exam period.

Capture those memories!  2015 Yearbooks are now on sale. The cost is $40. Pay by cheque (Carman Collegiate) or cash at the office. The deadline to order your book is Monday, February 2, 2015. 

Child Fitness Tax Credits

The Child Fitness Tax Credit receipts are available at the office for parent pick up.  The Child Fitness Tax Credit is for any parent who paid a school sport fee in the 2014 calendar year.  If parents wish to call and give permission for their child to pick up their receipt, you are welcome to do that.

Social Media Fitness presentations

Mr. Chris Vollum presented to parents at NPC in Winkler on Wednesday evening and to our grade 7 to 12 students on Thursday morning.  He gave information on the privacy issues of the major social media sites, and shared information on how to protect you reputations and privacy when using these sites.  Very good sessions.  For access to the information documents, go to the Carman Collegiate homepage.  The documents for parents and for students are posted there.

Students on Ice Artic Expedition

Congratulations to Madi S for being accepted into the 2015 Students on Ice Arctic Expedition.  She will have the opportunity to explore the Canadian Artic and Western Greenland this summer along with other students and scientists from around the world.

New AFM Counsellor at Collegiate

Carman Collegiate is pleased to welcome Mrs. Tara Smoker as the newly hired Addictions Foundation of Manitoba (AFM) counsellor.  She is excited to become part of the team of staff at the Collegiate who educate and support students. 
In her role as AFM counsellor, she is available at Carman Collegiate on Tuesdays and Thursdays to provide information and personal support to students and parents in the community.  Students may consider meeting with her if they are recognizing concerns with their own use of alcohol, drugs or gambling, or if they have concerns about the alcohol, drug or gambling use of someone close to them.  Tara's goal is to provide a safe, confidential, and non-judgmental place for youth to identify their values and set goals for themselves.
Youth are faced with many challenges related to their decisions around alcohol and drug use in their increasingly independent social and recreational activities.  By providing education and early prevention through classroom presentations and open office hours, students are provided  an opportunity to consider the risks and impacts of their choices.
Parents who may be looking for information and support in understanding the ways alcohol or drugs
may be impacting their youth are also welcome to contact Tara.

Grow Canada Conference

Bailey next to Brian Mulroney

This week, Bailey G had the opportunity to attend the premiere agricultural conference "Grow Canada". She was 1 of 3 students across Canada who were chosen to attend the conference in Ottawa from Dec. 2 - 4. The conference featured notable speakers on the topics of optimism and opportunities in agriculture. For Bailey, the conference highlight was meeting former Prime Minister Brian Mulroney. She had the responsibility of summarizing and sharing the "youth perspective" following his presentation.  She attended the conference with Ms. Massinon and they also took the opportunity to visit Parliament Hill and observe a session in the House of Commons.

Social Media presentation this Wednesday and Thursday

Parents, book Wednesday, December 10 - 7:00 pm at the Northlands Parkway Collegiate in Winkler.  This is a must see presentation in this day and age of our children using social media sites on a daily basis.  The presenter, Chris Vollum, requests that parents bring and use their smartphones and tablets to gain new knowledge about the social apps and sites that their kids are using to define their identities, personalities and reputations. .  The presentations goals are to provide clear examples, significant benefits and also risks associated with social sites like Twitter, Instagram, YouTube, Facebook, SnapChat, Tmblr, Vine, Pinterest, and others.  The takeaway is that parents will be educated with a deeper understanding on how to support and discuss benefits (of which there are many) and risks of these sites and apps with their children.
Mr. Vollum will be at Carman Collegiate on Thursday, December 11 at 11:00 am to present to our students.  Students are also invited to bring in their devices for the presentation.

Provincial Champions!!!

The Senior Varsity Cougar Boys capped off a great season with a Provincial title at home on Saturday night in front of a supportive crowd.  Carman Collegiate hosted the MHSAA AA Boys Volleyball provincial championship from November 27 to 29.  Nine teams from around the province gathered in Carman for round robin games and playoffs on Saturday. 
Our Cougars went through the round robin undefeated.  On Saturday, they defeated the Warren Wildcats in the quarter finals, then the Major Pratt Trojans in the semi finals.  The Cougars then faced the Niverville Panthers, defeating them in a very exciting three game match - 25 - 23, 21 - 25, and 15 - 13 to claim the title.  Tournament all-stars included Brett W and Dane N.  Congratulations to Mason M, tournament MVP.  This is Carman Collegiate's first provincial volleyball banner.  For more information and results, go to http://mhsaa.e-crew.ca/page.cfm?s=172&.

CTS Young Women in the Trades

On Tuesday, November 25, 2014, the Career and Technology Studies Coordinators in Prairie Rose School Division hosted a Young Women in the Trades - Apprenticeship Expo that highlighted several trade opportunities found in our local community. All Grade 10 girls from Prairie Rose School Division were informed about the benefits of apprenticeship and the opportunities that exist while still a high school student, and in the future. Some presentation highlights of the morning sessions were by Ms. Bloodsworth, an instructor of welding at RRC, who shared some of her “dirty”, but rewarding experiences of being a woman welder on a pipeline crew. Her hard work, long hours, and well-paying positions have allowed her financial security, and opportunities to move up in the field, and become an educator.  Ms. Phaneuf-Ahi of Apprenticeship Manitoba told the girls how one career leads to another when you are determined, dedicated to life-long learning, and love what you do. A Ford employee, Darielle, shared how sometimes a female face, who is very knowledgeable, and empathetic to your situation is sometimes exactly what is needed in a business. All the employers encouraged young women to take trade positions because they are more precise, intelligent, and quality-oriented.
In the afternoon of the event, all the girls chose various trades to explore by visiting local business owners in the area to gain hands-on insight into trades including a wide variety of non-traditional female careers ranging from:  Crane Equipment Operation, Electrical and Hydro careers, Agricultural and Automotive occupations and so much more.
We would like to thank our hosts for helping us out: Sperling Industries, Vanderveen Greenhouses, Carman Golf Club, Carman Ford, Diane’s Hairstyling, Carman Collision Centre, Walinga, John Deere, Campfire Union, MB Infrastructure and Transportation, and MB Hydro. Young Women in the Trades is definitely an option for the next generation of graduates!

MPI Friends for Life Presentation

One bad choice that forever changed a family

Our grade 7 to 12 students had the opportunity this morning to hear the important reasons for making positive and safe choices in life, especially when behind the wheel.

 

Greg Drew has lived through a parent’s worst nightmare, the loss of his 17-year-old son. Greg had a long career in fire services, but nothing could have prepared him for arriving at the scene of an accident, where his own son was trapped inside a car after a high speed crash.  Greg wants high school students to know their decisions affect everyone around them. His unforgettable presentation highlights the importance of making safe driving choices and staying alive.

 

The Friends for Life speaker series uses an eye-opening, real life stories to educate high school students about the consequences of dangerous driving behaviors, including speeding, impaired driving, and distracted driving.  Youth aged 16 to 19 have much higher rates of serious collisions compared to more experienced drivers.  But these crashes can be avoided. Bring Friends For Life to your school and encourage students to make good decisions when they are behind the wheel or when accepting rides from friends.

 

Young Women in the Trades Expo

On Tuesday, November 25, 2014, Prairie Rose School Division is hosting a Young Women in the Trades - Apprenticeship Expo that will highlight the various trades in our local community. In the morning all grade 10 girls from Prairie Rose School Division will meet at Carman Collegiate. Students will learn about apprenticeship and the opportunities that exist. Nick Verras, the Career and Technology Studies Division Coordinator, will discuss with students the benefits apprenticeship has to offer and explain the process of becoming a high school apprentice.

Apprenticeship Manitoba will make a presentation and discuss the transition from high to adult apprenticeship. Other guest speakers will also present and provide additional information on women in the trades.

Lunch will be provided for students. After lunch, students will board buses and get dropped off various sites. The various sites will provide an introduction to a particular trade. Students will be shown demonstrations that highlight a variety of careers in specific trade areas. Students will also participate in hands-on-activities.

Student Council Fundraisers underway

Carman Collegiate Student Council is currently selling Bothwell Cheese and Mom's Pantry products. A letter and forms were initially sent home on November 7, and more forms are available at the office if needed. The deadline for submitting orders is as follows:

• Bothwell Cheese - due Monday, November 24 by noon
• Mom's Pantry - due Tuesday, November 25 by 3:40

Report Cards Sent Home

Grade 7 to 12 report cards were sent home on Thursday by both paper version with students and by email.  Some technical difficulties were experienced with some report cards resulting in a second batch of reports having to be sent out for some students. 
Student Conferences take place on Monday, November 24 from 6:00 pm to 8:30 pm and Wednesday, November 26 from 12:00 pm to 3:00 pm.  A majority of teachers will be set up in the theatre as our gym floor is prepared for the Provincial Volleyball Championships. 
As in previous years, we ask that students be part of the conferences, as they are the most important element of these meetings.
Please note that Mrs. Ens will not be available for student conferences on Wednesday afternoon.

Provincial Volleyball Coming to Carman

Carman will be the host site of the 2014 AA Senior Boys Volleyball Provincials from November 27 thru to November 29.  Carman will be welcoming nine teams from around the province plus our own Cougars. 
Games will start on Thursday morning, with the opening ceremonies scheduled for Thursday at 1:00 pm.  Games will then continue throughout Thursday, ending in the late afternoon as we prepare for the players banquet.  Games then continue throughout Friday.  Playoffs will take place on Saturday.  All games are open to the public, with entrance fees set at $3 per day or $7 for a tournament pass.
Our own Cougar boys are currently ranked number one in the province.

First Aid

Our grade 11 students completed their Emergency First Aid Training on Thursday and Friday of this week.  This course is mandatory for all students in the school division. 

Rangeland Adventure

On Thursday, Ms. Massinon's Agriculture 30S class participated in the Amazing Rangeland Adventure at the Westoba Agricultural Centre in Brandon.  Students learned about Manitoba agriculture through hands on experiences at various interactive stations staffed by farmers and ag-industry professionals.

2014 DISCOVERY DAYS AT U OF M

Discovery Days is a highly successful and sought after health sciences program for high school students, comprised of a dynamic and inspiring keynote lecture and interactive workshops at the University of Manitoba’s Basic Medical Services located at the Health Sciences Centre, in Winnipeg.  In addition, the participants attended a panel discussion  exploring careers in medicine as high school students were in dialogue with researchers, clinicians and educators as they share the evolution of their academic and professional careers.  Approximately 200 high school students from across Manitoba had the opportunity to attend this one day event.   Future aspiring medical professionals Allen C. and Bailey G.  grade 11 and grade 12 students from Carman Collegiate attended this excellent day on November 7th as they explored and discovered a wide spectrum of areas, as well as gained a clear picture of what it would be like to be a health professional in medical and health sciences to educate, inspire and encourage careers in the medical field.  Former Carman Collegiate Grad Jack Heard is in his first year of Medicine at the U of M, pictured here with Allan and Bailey.       

Giving Voice

On Tuesday, our grade 7, 8, and 9 students attended a presentation by Giving Voice theatre group.  Our students were given the opportunity to look into the lives of two youths living in care and see the different issues youths in care may face.  Our students were then given the opportunity to rewind certain scenes and become actively involved in changing the way certain characters behaved, and therefore changing the long term outcomes.

This was spirit week at Carman Collegiate.  Thank you to all the students and staff who dressed up and showed their school spirit.  Thursday was grade wars where the grade had to compete to make clothes out of newspapers.  Thursday night saw over 110 students dance the night away.  Halloween was costume day.

Carman Student 1 of 3 in Canada off to Ottawa

Bailey G. has been selected as 1 of 3 students from across Canada to be feature at Canada's premier Agricultural Conference: Grow Canada in Ottawa (Dec. 2-4).  Students will have the opportunity to express their opinions and views to an audience of 500 conference delegates.

She was selected for her agricultural background, submitting a well written essay, and for her enthusiasm and speaking ability during a telephone interview

Take Our Kids To Work

Carman Collegiate Grade 9 students received a T-Shirt to wear on T.O.K.T.W. Day.  T.O.K.T.W. is a Canadian Career Initiative that takes place on November 5, 2014.

Girls in Gaming

Grade 7, 8 and 9 students met Thursday, Oct. 23 to take part in a Girls in Gaming session. Tara Brown, a technology teacher from Red River College, spoke about the use of technology in our society, technology careers and about the Business Information Technology course offered through Red River College.  Robin and Sandy Debreuil taught the students how to create artwork in Flash and then bring the artwork into a program called Pixate which allowed them to create a prototype of a phone app.  It was a fun day and we hope to have another session in the future.

Family Movie Night is Back!

Family Movie Night returns on Wednesday, October 29 with the showing of Planes Fire and Rescue.  Show time is 7:00 pm.  Arrive early to get you popcorn.  Cost is $5 per person or $15 for the family.  This is a philanthropy group fundraiser.

MPPC UNIVERSITY/COLLEGE FAIR

The grade 11 and 12 students from Carman, Elm Creek, and Miami had an exceptional opportunity to attend university and college presentations on October 23.  They were able to speak with representatives from the University of Manitoba, University of Winnipeg, Brandon University, Canadian Mennonite University, Providence College, Red River College, Assiniboine Community College, Booth University/College, and the Manitoba Institute of Trades and Technology as Carman Collegiate hosted the annual MPPC University/College fair. These presentations are informative for students planning post-secondary education, and it provided options and inspiration for others who are undecided.  Thank you to all the post-secondary institutions. 

Central Manitoba Youth Choir Scholarship goes to Carman Student

Congratulations to Zack H, recipient of the Provincials Honors Choir Scholarship from the Central Manitoba Youth Choir. 

Check out the CMYC performance tonight at 7:30 pm at the United Church in Carman.  Carman Collegiate students Zack H and William A are part of the Choir performing around the region over the next three days. 

Eva Olsson Holocaust Presentation

The Carman Collegiate Community Theatre was pleased to host Eva Olsson Tuesday evening for a presentation to the public.  Dr. Olsson shared her story of living through the horrors of the holocaust, and her beliefs to why people did this.  She then returned Wednesday and presented to grade 5 to 8 students in the morning and grade 9 to 12 students in the afternoon.  She shared her opinion on why people bully others, and gave a very touching plea to students to be kind and understanding to their peers.

Safe Workers of Tomorrow

Carman Collegiate Grade 9 students participated in a Safe Workers of Tomorrow Presentation on October 15, in preparation for the Canada's annual "Take Our Kid to Work" day on November 5, 2014.  "Take Our Kids To Work" is a Career Initiative for all Grade 9 students from across Canada, to experience a day at work through attending the work place with their parent, host or volunteer. 

The Grade 11 students attended a Safe Workers of Tomorrow one day training session in preparation for further career advancement, this initiative is created through the CTS Program. 

The Safe Workers of Tomorrow Presentations provide information to students in regard to health and safety issues, workplace hazards as well as proactive methods to prevent injuries while in the workplace. 

Thank you to our local businesses who allowed are students to visit their workplaces and conduct safety audits.

Graduation 2015 Parent Meeting

Parents and Grad 2015 students are invited to an informational meeting on Wednesday, October 29 at 5:15 pm in the Carman Collegiate Community Theatre.  At email was sent out to parents regarding this meeting along with an agenda. 

Welcome Eva Olsson

The public are welcome to join us Tuesday evening in the Carman Collegiate Community Theatre to hear Eva Olsson present on her experiences as a Holocaust survivor, and the message of standing up for peace and justice.  Eva will also be presenting to our students on Wednesday during the day.

2013 - 2014 Yearbooks Are In!

The Carman Collegiate 2013 - 2014 "Piece by Piece" Yearbooks have been delivered to students who ordered them.  Congratulation to Ms. Armstrong, Amanda M, and the yearbook staff on another excellent production.

If you did not order a 2013-2014 yearbook but would like one please contact the office as there are a limited number of extras available.

Work has already begun on the 2014-2015 yearbook which will have the theme, "Remember When".  

We are please to have students on our yearbook staff representing Grades 7-12 this year. If you are interested in working on yearbook you can speak to Ms. Armstrong in the library. We generally meet Wednesdays over the lunch hour in the Grade 8 room behind Mrs. Sigurdson's class. Listen for announcements each week.

Youth Olympic Games Presentation on Wednesday, October 8

Jay O will be presenting to our students in the afternoon, and then to community in the evening on Wednesday, October 8.  Jay will share his experiences of competing at the Youth Olympic Games in Nanjing, China this summer where he captured first in the B side championship of the 3000 m race, and also established a new personal best at that distance. 
The evening presentation will start at 7:00 pm in the Carman Collegiate Community Theatre and is open to all community.  Please come out and hear a great success story of one of our own.

The next order will be due at the end of November so that items can be ordered in time for the Christmas break.

Grade 7 and 8 Choir

Ms. Cole from the Carman Elementary School has started a grade 7 and 8 school choir.  Students meet on Wednesdays from 4:00 pm to 5:00 pm.  On early dismissal days, choir practice moves to Thursday at 4:00 pm.  Any grade 7 or 8 students are invited to attend.  Practices are at the Collegiate.

Author David Robertson Visit

Today author/graphic novelist/poet/TV writer/creator and educator David Robertson visited our school. Due to number constraints, students whose teachers had indicated that they had a talent and interest for writing and/or art were invited to attend.   You can find out more about David Alexander Robertson at his cool website here: http://www.darobertson.ca/ You can find his graphic novels in our library.

Mr. Robertson spoke about how he was asked to write a poem in Grade 3 and reluctantly (hiding in a closet in the back of the room) decided to try. He loved the experience so much he wrote a lot of poems instead of just one. With positive feedback from his teacher, who typed, printed and created a booklet of his poems, he decided that he wanted to become a writer. He said his mom supported him in his dream right from the start.  He told students this was important in everyone's life, to have someone who believes in you and supports you in your pursuits, even if sometimes others may not.

Mr. Robertson also spoke about what it was like growing up as a half Cree, half Irish/Scottish student in Winnipeg. He was mostly brought up by his mom after his parents parted when he was young. But when he was older, his mom and dad reunited and his dad moved back in with him, his mom and his siblings. Living apart from his Cree father for so long, and enduring teasing about the colour of his skin when he was in elementary and middle school, Mr. Robertson said he spent a lot of time growing up buying into stereotypes about indigenous people and about the North End of Winnipeg. He said he even sometimes laughed along to inappropriate and racist jokes in order to belong, all the while feeling a pain inside about doing so.

When his mom and dad, a respected educator, reunited and David came to know his father, he had to relearn everything he had thought about indigenous people. His dad didn't fit the stereotype others had created and neither did other indigenous people that he met. He decided he wanted to so something to educate others. He combined his two loves of writing and comics, and started writing graphic novels.  In addition to containing great stories and art (provided by artists Scott B. Henderson and for The Helen Betty Osborne Story, Madison Blackstone) the graphic novels can be used to educate students about indigenous culture and history, including residential schools.

His first graphic novel was The Life of Helen Betty Osborne. He also wrote Sugar Falls (A Residential Schools Story), The 7 Generations series which includes Stones, Scars, Ends/Begins and The Pact, and the Tales from Big Spirit series which includes The Ballad of Nancy April: Shawnadithit, The Land of Os: John Ramsay, The Poet: Pauline Johnson, The Rebel: Gabriel Dumont, The Scout: Tommy Prince, and The Peacemaker: Thanadelthur.

Grade Wars

Student Council hosted their first of several Grade Wars today right after lunch.  Students were changed on several tasks, the last being who could stack plastic cups the highest.  Congrats to all the groups, as many went over the 7 foot mark.  The challenges given to students were all cooperative in nature, having teams build or organize themselves. 

Terry Fox Run

Our annual Terry Fox run took place on Wednesday, September 24 just prior to the lunch hour.  Our students ran and walked the community walking path.  Our students raised over $1360 for the Terry Fox Foundation.  Congratulations to our top fundraisers:  Ashley H. Katie TM, Stacie M, Amanda M, and Hannah B.  Thank you to all who collected pledges and donated to this worthy cause.

Foods Class in King's Park

Foods class moved to the great outdoors on Thursday morning.  Students took part in creating some dutch oven hamburgers and other items.  Mr. Rempel has several cooking classes set over the upcoming weeks for our students to expand their cooking abilities.

Terry Fox Run

Carman Collegiate is proud to again take part in the annual Terry Fox Run this Wednesday, September 24.  Our run will begin at 11:15 am and at approximately 12:00 pm.  Students will cross the highways by our school, the RCMP station, the Boyne Lodge, and the post office. 
Students will be out collecting pledges in support of the Terry Fox Foundation.  Last year we raised over $2500.  The top fundraiser will receive a Terry Fox T Shirt.

Grade Wars

Student Council are hosting monthly Grade Wars this year.  These popular activities have the grades compete against each other in school spirit activities.  The first event is on Thursday, September 25.  Students are asked to support their grade by dressing up in their grade colors.  Colors are:

Grade 7 - Red
Grade 8 - Blue
Grade 9 - Grey
Grade 10 - White
Grade 11 - Black
Grade 12 - Tight and Bright

Grade teams earn point for number of students donning their teams colors.  Other activities will also occur on this day.  Please support your grade and your student council.

Open House and Awards Evening

Carman Collegiate hosted their annual Open House and Grade 9 to 11 Awards evening on Thursday, September 11.  The evening started in the theatre with an introduction of all teachers, an introduction to the Carman Collegiate school goals, how to keep up with all the information, and a discussion regarding our Home and School Association.  We then moved to the newly renovated library for a chance to visit, and then grade 7 and 8 parents toured their children's classrooms, and the grade 10 to 12 students returned to the theatre for the presentation of the 2013 - 2014 awards.  Thank you to all who attended and to all our award recipients. 

Robb Nash Returning to Carman Collegiate

We are pleased to be welcoming back to Carman Collegiate Robb Nash on Tuesday, September 16 starting at 1:00 pm.  Robb shares a great story of battling adversity and overcoming overwhelming obstacles in a delivery that touches the heart and will have students laughing.  Robb has presented to our students in 2011 and 2012. 

Suicide Prevention Awareness Day

Wednesday, September 10 saw many of our students fly kites during the lunch hour to commemorate Suicide Prevention Awareness Day.  The event saw representatives from the Regional Health Authority and Safe Communities join our students on this cool but windy day.

Off to a Great Start!

Welcome back!!!

We wish to start by welcoming Ms. Kirsten Carman onto staff.  She is teaching Foods while Mrs. Courtney is in the Ukraine growing her family.  Ms. Carman taught foods in Transcona last year and does have an ancestral connection to the founder of Carman.
We also are welcoming three exchange students to our school and community.  Welcome to Sabine from Switzerland, and Jana and Lina from Germany.

We would like to invite everyone to join us at our Open House and Awards Ceremony on Thursday, September 11.  The open house will start at 7:00 pm.  This is an excellent opportunity to meet the teachers, see the building, and have a visit.  At 8:00 pm, we will then move into the 2013 - 2014 grade 9 to 11 Awards Ceremony in the Carman Collegiate Community Theatre.  All are welcome to attend.

Band Aide Returns September 6

Join us Saturday Sept. 6 at the outdoor stage at Ryall Park.

The first band will start playing at 6:30 so, grab your lawn chair and come as early as 6:00 p.m. to the picturesque Ryall Park in Carman, Manitoba. There will be some acoustic music  as the bands get ready to take the stage.

The Bad Boy Teenager Club, our Carman Collegiate rock band featuring Allan D, Darren U, and Tyson S and some guest singer/players.

Special Guests from Sanford/Starbuck/Oak Bluff/Waterloo featuring Andrew Murray, Jana McCluskey, Connor Hopper, Jamie Murray, Kendal Shirtliff, Jake Armstrong and Bailey Shirtliff.

Talent Whack from Sanford/Oak Bluff/Waterloo, reuniting in their first appearance together on stage since Band Aid 2012 with Jake Armstrong, Andrew Murray, Luke Anseeuw, and Troy Anseeuw.

Band Aid alumni Braden Kauenhofen, Colin Hay, Evan Dracass and Cyrus Walker from Carman/Winnipeg/Sperling.

As we are using the lovely Ryall stage at no cost, this show is free. 

In the spirit of the "Aid" concept of our Band Aid concerts, there will be a donation basket for Carman Collegiate's Philanthropy Group fund which is annually used for worthy projects in the community Be sure to check out the group's movie nights throughout the year.

Band Aid concert proceeds have previously gone to band trip costs, Haiti relief, the Red Cross and to purchase sound equipment for our school rock band.

Grade 7 and 8 Awards

Alex C - Kent Atkins recipient

The Carman Collegiate grade 7 and 8 annual academic awards took place on Wednesday, June 25.  Recognition was given for top academic standing in all subjects, and class awards for Most Improved, Citizenship, and Student of the Year.  Congratulations to our many award winners.  We also gave the Kent Atkins Memorial Award out to the grade 8 student with the highest academic average in all their subjects.  This years recipient was Alex C.

Graduation 2014

Graduation 2014 took place on Tuesday, June 24 at the Carman Community Hall.  Forty four students graduated from Carman Collegiate this year, and we had four exchange students take part in the graduating exercises as honour grads.  Congratulations to all our graduating class, and to their parents and families for the making the day a wonderful event.

Thank you to the community for their continued support of our Scholarship program.  And Congratulations to our many winners.  Two awards that we will make notice of are the Staff Award and the Governor Generals Award.

Nominees for the Staff Award included Samantha C, Brianne J, Cody L, and Kylie N.  This Award is given to students who have demonstrated high academic achievement, leadership qualities, and involvement in student and community activities.  The award was shared between Samantha C and Kylie N.

The Governor Generals Academic Medal is awarded to the student with the top average of all their grade 11 and 12 marks combined.  This year’s recipient was Kylie N.

The Silent Singer Honoured in Winnipeg

Janessa W accepted a writing award and a cheque for $50 at an awards gala hosted at the Millenium Library on June 25. The gala was to honour winners of the Winnipeg Free Press and Writers' Collective of Manitoba's 2014 Short Fiction Contest. Janessa's story, "The Silent Singer", won third place in the Senior Student Category. 

Janessa said the inspiration for "The Silent Singer" came from three of her four siblings, all born deaf and now assisted by cochlear implants.

The Grade 12 student originally wrote the story as part of her Grade 11 ELA exam and was encouraged by Carman Collegiate English teacher Warren Hoffman and Librarian Heather Armstrong to adjust the word count and submit the story to the contest.

Contest judge Lance Guilbault called "The Silent Singer" a "beautiful, beautiful story" that "inspired readers to sing their own song". 

As part of her prize, Janessa will enjoy a one-year membership to the Writers' Collective of Manitoba which includes free access to writing resources, invitations to writing events, contest entry fee discounts and a subscription to the Writers' Collective newsletter.

Annual Athletic Banquet and Awards

The Fourth Annual Carman Collegiate Athletic Banquet was held Thursday evening at the Active Living Centre.  A great evening of recognizing the MVP’s and Coaches Awards in our junior and senior varsity athletic programs. This was an exceptional year for our Athletic’s program as we captured eight Zone IV banners (Cross Country Boys Champ, Girls golf, Sr. Boys Volleyball, all four basketball titles, and the badminton junior aggregate championship, Girls Double Badminton, Track and Field) and one provincial title as we repeated as the Sr. Boys Basketball champs.  Besides the team awards, provincial participation certificates where handed out and the male and female athletes of the year.  Congratulations to the following students:

The Silent Singer

On June 9^th the Winnipeg Free Press and The Writer’s Collective of Manitoba announced the winners from their annual Writing Contest. Janessa W., a Carman Collegiate grade 12 student, placed third in the province with her story, “The Silent Singer”. Janessa will receive her award for Short Fiction in the Senior Student Category at the 2014 Awards Gala to be held on June 25 at the Millennium Library in Winnipeg.

Beverly Ens and School Spirit Awards

Last Friday we started off our June So Soon celebration by awarding the Beverly Ens Memorial Award and the Spirit Award.

The Beverly Ens Memorial Award were presented to past presidents of the student council: Caitlin H. and Brianne J.  Beverly Ens was the Carman Collegiate Student Council president when she was involved in a fatal car accident in 1984.  The award is in appreciation on the work done and sacrifices made to give all students an enjoyable school experience.  Our 2013-2014 school presidents put in a huge number of hours planning, setting up, and participating in events.

 

The School Spirit Award was then awarded to Tim D and Jeffrey Z.  The School Spirit Award was first presented in 1966.  The school spirit award is presented to the student or students who contribute behind the scenes and without thought of reward, has a cooperative attitude with both their peers and staff, demonstrates a genuine concern for others, and has a positive “lets get things done” outlook. 

 

All of our nominees are recognized for their contributions to school activities.  These include:  Bjarne B, Cody L, Mason M, Amanda M, Kylie N, Dane N, and Sierra W.

Tim D, our one recipient, was everywhere, whether setting up the baseball diamonds, making drama props, or doing a host of duties in the gym without ever being asked, he was there.  

Jeff Z, our other recipient, is the face of our sound and lighting in the theatre.  All events were set up, run, and taken down by this person.  The running of the theatre for events has some big shoes to be filled.

Exam Week

June 16 to 19 is exam week for our grade 9 to 12 students.  Grade 7 and 8 students still have regular scheduled classes. 

Please note that exams start at 9:00 am and 1:00 pm sharp.  Grade 9 to 12 students have no regular classes during this time.  Students should have all necessary items to write their exams, will turn in all electronic devices at the door (cell phones, iPods, etc), and will be required to spend a minimum amount of time in the examination room.

Students are free to leave the school upon completion of their exams.  If students decide to remain in the school, they are to be in either the library or the canteen.  Some students still need to complete course work or portfolios and they will be given access to computer labs if required.

Students are asked to inform their bus drivers if they are finished and no longer needing to ride into school.

Arts Appreciation Evening

Gr. 9 - 12 Band gave the audience big sound.

Our Carman Collegiate Bands, conducted by Mr. Rivest, gave a great performance of a variety of musical selections.  We bid farewell to our graduating music students, and thanked them for their six years of dedication.  Thank you to all who attended and enjoyed a great evening of music and art.  Be sure to book the first Wednesday of next June for our Arts Appreciation 2015 performance.

A wide variety of art pieces were presented in the halls of the Collegiate last night.  Our grade 7 - 9 art classes had a wide range of pictures and painting presented.  Art Mentorship students also displayed their talents with a mixture of sculptures, sketches, and paintings.

Friday is our annual June So Soon Celebration.  We start the day with an Entertainment Assembly, followed by Grade Wars, a BBQ, and then we head off to Colert Beach in Morden.  Students must sign up with permission forms and $5.00 to go to Colert Beach.  Forms and money must be in at the office by Wednesday, June 11 at 1:30 pm.  An email with this information and forms has been sent home on Thursday.  Students will be back from Colert Beach in time for 3:40 pm dismissal. 

Student Council has great activities planned, be sure to get involved.

Snowbirds Visit Carman Collegiate

After a great fly over on June 3 by the Snowbirds, Carman Collegiate was pleased to welcome 1997 graduate Capt. Morgan Strachan back to Carman on Wednesday, June 4.  Capt. Strachan (Snowbird 9) presented to all our students with Snowbird 3 and a Snowbird Technician.  The members spoke of the need for skill, professionalism, and teamwork in their jobs and how these attributes transfer to all parts of life.  They also had some gear on them and had some fun dressing up Brett W. 
The team was then off to Portage for the airshow that evening.  Ryley C, our resident pilot, was invited by Captain Strachan to attend the pilot briefing prior to the show Wednesday evening.  The Snowbirds gave a great presentation to our students and feedback from our students who attended the airshow, even though weather shortened their routine, it was still great.

Miss Teen Southern Manitoba

Congratulations to Sierra W. who was crowned May 11 as Miss Teen Southern MB. She competed in the provincial pageant and was one of five who were chosen to move forward to Nationals. Nationals are hosted the week of July 19th in Toronto. As a title holder Sierra has elected to take the first steps towards a leadership role in and around her community as a volunteer. Each delegate is selected based on personal accomplishments, goals and commitment to community service. She has been an active leader in the school’s Philanthropy Group from its inception. In order to maintain a spot in Nationals each delegate is responsible for raising adequate funds for an organization called Free The Children. Free The Children is an international charity that believes in a world where all children are free to achieve their fullest potential. Free The Children informs, educates, engages and empowers youth to become active local and global citizens. To support Sierra as she raises money for this organization she invites you to attend her fundraiser at the Active Living Centre on June 11 from 7-9pm.
