Multi-Talented Carman Product Signs Letter Of Intent With Men’s Basketball

Riley Ens knows a thing or two about winning. The 6'2 forward led the Carman Cougars to the MHSAA 2A Provincial Championship in Boy's Volleyball, Hockey and the sport he will suit up for at CMU, Basketball.
In his Grade 12 year, Ens averaged 30 points and 14 rebounds per game to earn selection as the 2017 2A Boy's Player of the Year, 2017 2A Boy's Player's Choice Award and the 2017 2A Boys Provincial Most Valuable Player Award. Ens also participated in the 2017 "A-3A" Basketball Manitoba Graduating All-Star festivities at St. Paul's High School in April.
"Riley brings us a very high basketball IQ in a young player", said head coach Billy Isaac who enters his fifth year with the Men's Basketball program, "Offensively, he moves really well without the ball and he consistently is able to find space for himself on the floor."
The 2017-18 Men's Basketball schedule was released on Thursday. Ens and the Blazers will be in Caronport, Saskatchewan on September 22nd and 23rd to tipoff their preseason with the ACAC's Briercrest Clippers and then return home on September 29th and 30th to host the ACAC's Ambrose Lions.
The Blazers will embark on their second season in the Northern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference on November 3rd and 4th when they host the AFLBS Conquerors in the Loewen Athletic Centre. CMU was also selected to serve as host of the 2018 MCAC Men's and Women's Basketball Championship Final on February 10th.

Zone 4 Scholarships

Three Zone 4 student/athletes were front and centre Thursday in Winnipeg as the Manitoba High Schools Athletic Association presented basketball and hockey scholarships.

Bailey Grantham of Portage Collegiate Institute received both the Sami Jo Small Award sponsored by the Manitoba Hockey Hall of Fame & Museum which is worth $1,000 and the Alexander Josephson Memorial Scholarship worth $2,000.

“I thought I was just up for one so getting the second one was a very big surprise,” said Grantham. “I'm pleased that I have it and that all my hard work paid off.”

Grantham, who recorded 31 goals and 50 points in 22 regular season games with the PCI Saints, was named a Winnipeg Women's High School Hockey League All-Star this past season.

The Saints captain said playing high school hockey was a memorable experience.

“You can still have a social life. You can still work and play other sports. It really made a difference, four years of it. It made it so enjoyable.”

Grantham will attend the University of Manitoba this fall and plans to enrol in the Faculty of Science.

Rylan Metcalf
of Carman Collegiate was the recipient of the Garett Lee Sidor Memorial Basketball Scholarship which was presented for the first time.

Sidor was a student/athlete at Windor Park Collegiate in Winnipeg. He passed away in May of 2007 just a couple of month after the Royals won the Provincial “AAA” High School Varsity Boys Basketball Championship. Friends and family have come together to put a $750 scholarship in his name to be awarded to a male basketball player each year.

Metcalf helped the Cougars win the Provincial “AA” Championship this past March and was named to the tournament All-Star team.

“It's a huge honour and it means a lot,” said Metcalf shortly after he received the scholarship. “It made me pretty proud of myself.”

Metcalf, who is weighing his post-secondary school options, added that he thoroughly enjoyed his high school basketball career.

“It was super fun and our team, we got better and better. We really played like a team from grade 9 to grade 12 and it showed. It was really fun.”

Finley Wheeler
of Morden Collegiate took home the Winnipeg Jets Alumni & Friends Scholarship worth $1,000.

“It's quite a big honour,” said Wheeler. “I feel proud of myself. I'm very thankful for everybody that's helped me get to this point.”

The Morden Thunder were Zone 4 High School Hockey League champions for the third straight season and Wheeler played on all three teams.

“Three championships, obviously that's awesome but being around that group of guys, that's really what it's about, that comradeship. That's what this high school league offers. An opportunity for guys to play hockey together, to make friends for life, and I feel like that's a unique opportunity - one that I'll cherish forever.”

Wheeler will graduate from Morden Collegiate next month and his plans are to attend the University of British Columbia and pursue a degree in engineering.

“Things are coming to an end here,” said Wheeler. “And yet things are also just beginning so it's exciting for sure.”

Metcalf makes the grade as a rookie  By: Matt Packwood

BRANDON – Following an outstanding freshman season, Mason Metcalf has been named to the Canada West conference's all-rookie team. The Carman, Man. product led the Bobcats in blocks this past season with 57, and finished second on the team in service aces (15), and also hit an impressive .322 efficiency on his attacks. Impressive performances considering there was little to no expectation on the Carman product coming out of high school. "Mason's development was unbelievably quick. From the time we started training camp to our first games, he grew so much physically and mentally in terms of how to play the game. He surprised a lot of people, including some of our own, so for us to see him get recognized by coaches across the conference is very exciting," says coach Grant Wilson This is the second year in a row that Metcalf has been recognized as an outstanding athlete, as he was named last year's Manitoba High School Athletic Association Male Athlete of the Year for his final year of high school athletics. "He's a naturally gifted athlete who thinks about the game and asks a lot of questions because he's continually striving to get better. He works hard every day to get better, and he absorbs information and it's very clear that he puts that to use when he steps on the court," Wilson adds.

The five runners won the race in an outstanding time of 3 hours and 42 minutes. They were recognized with 1st place medals at the grade 7 and 8 awards ceremony.  Congratulations on a great race!
Badminton Summer Camp - (posted June 26, 2015)
The Manitoba Badminton Association week-long summer camps employ the top players and coaches in Manitoba to teach the basics of badminton with high quality, and ensure that fun and life-long skills are learned.  In 2015, Carman Collegiate is hosting a camp from August 24 to 28.  We need a minimum of 10 registrations to make the Carman Badminton Summer Camp occur.  It is a great camp that has inspired many athletes to pursue badminton as a competitive sport and we have been running for about 12 years in Winnipeg and 8 years in the Interlake.  The registration deadline is Friday August 7th. We need registrations to reach at least 10 athletes by that date or we will have to cancel the camp and refund those who have already registered.
Hoping to have your support in keeping us a part of the Carman Summer Tradition!

Mason signs with the Brandon University Bobcats Men's Volleyball Team - (posted May 15) Grant Wilson felt quite a bit of relief on Wednesday when he announced Carman’s Mason Metcalf has committed to join the Brandon University Bobcats men’s volleyball team in the fall. Not only does the six-foot-six middle and left side round out Wilson’s recruiting class, he also fills a void that the coach was worried about. Metcalf’s addition gives Wilson four middles on next year’s roster. Wilson is excited to watch veterans James Weir and Daven Pascal compete with Metcalf and fellow newcomer Chayse Warkentin of Gladstone for the two open starting spots. "Those guys will battle and whoever is going to be the most consistent and the best help for our team will play, and Mason’s certainly going to be in that mix and we’ll see where it goes," said Wilson, who lost middles Frank Jones and Brendan White to graduation after last season. "I was definitely leery about going into next season with just three middles and so bringing Mason in solidifies that fourth spot, and I feel more comfortable now as we move into the off-season." Metcalf comes with some lofty credentials. He was named tournament MVP at this season’s provincial AA high school championship, where he helped the host Carman Cougars win the title. He was also named a Volleyball Manitoba A/AA/AAA graduating all-star. He’s playing club volleyball with the 18-and-under Aztecs, who finished fourth at provincials and will compete for a national Division 2 championship in Calgary this weekend, and Wilson loves the athleticism in Metcalf’s game. "As big as he is, he jumps well and he’s pretty fast," Wilson said. "He’s a pretty strong kid and being able to play a couple positions is something we like. As you’ve seen over the years, injuries creep in and you need guys to fill different roles. He’s going to be able to do that for us." Metcalf showed off his athleticism during his high school career playing numerous sports at a very high level. He helped the Cougars win provincial AA basketball championships in 2013 and 2014. He was the tournament MVP in his Grade 10 season and an all-star each of the last two years. He was also named to the A/AA/AAA boys’ all-Manitoba basketball team this season. In hockey, Metcalf finished his high school career as the Cougars’ all-time leader in points and assists and helped them finish second at provincials in 2013. He eventually decided to pursue volleyball, but it’s that diversity that Wilson really likes. "For me, I prefer recruiting kids who have multi-sporting backgrounds," he said. "The reality is they just get put in lots of different situations and we see lots of different styles of coaching and quite often they’re just better prepared to deal with lots of situations that are going to arrive. "In terms of volleyball, when they do get to our level and the more they focus on it, there’s still a lot of room for growth. That will certainly be the case for Mason.
