On Thursday, November 26, Biology 30 students participated in a Health Careers day where they visited various health locations around the community. Students had the opportunity to participate in concurrent workshops that focused on different human biology topics, including mental health, sports injuries/concussions, lab & x-ray analysis, dentistry, athletic therapy, cancer care, and public health. Thank-you to all the local groups and businesses who helped put on a great event!
Feedback from a survey the students did after the Bio / Health Day showed that the students had a wide range of interests from the day, over half now had an increased level of interest in pursuing a health related career, and that they highly recommended that this day continue to be offered to students.

You can’t buy a ticket to We Day. Students earn their event tickets by taking one local and one global action through We Schools, our yearlong educational program that engages and empowers young people to become compassionate leaders and active citizens. Some students collect food for homeless shelters. Others raise money to build classrooms overseas. Every young person makes their own journey to We Day, but together, they discover their power to change the world.

National Teen Driver Safety Week - Oct. 19 to 23
Young people only make up 13% of all licensed drivers in this country, but they account for approximately one quarter of all road-related injuries and fatalities. Driver distraction is a factor in between 15%-19% of all fatal collisions involving teen drivers. And young people all have best friends. They are the people you make plans with, the people you talk to, and the people with whom you share the most important things. If you care about your best friend, let them know that teen driver safety is a huge issue in Canada. Join Parachute in making these completely preventable injuries a thing of the past, and ensure that you and your best friends remain Best Friends Forever.
BFFs Practice Safe Text
One in four young adults know someone who has been impacted as a result of distracted driving, so tell your friends to put the phone away when they are driving a car.
Curb the Texting
Almost all young adults feel that texting and driving is very dangerous, but over half still admit to doing it anyway. Don’t text and drive.
Focus on the Road, Not on Your Phone
Using your smartphone while driving quadruples your risk of a crash and taking your eyes off the road for more than two seconds doubles your risk of getting into a collision.
Friends Don’t Let Best Friends Text and Drive
Eight out of ten young adults said they would speak up if they saw a friend texting and driving, so be a leader and speak up if you see a friend texting and driving.
It’s Not Worth the Risk
Young adults believe that distracted driving is not as dangerous as impaired driving and almost 40 per cent of adults do not consider using a smartphone while stopped at a traffic light to be distracted driving. Cell phones and driving don’t mix.

World Food Conference
On Oct. 14-17, Bailey G and Ms. Massinon attended the Global Youth Institute at the World Food Conference in Des Moines, Iowa. Bailey was chosen as one of two students to represent Manitoba after writing a paper on why she is optimistic about the future of agriculture. In preparation for the conference, she undertook a research project about a critical food security issue and presented her findings while at the conference. As well, she was able to connect with international experts and students from around the world that share her passion for agriculture. One of the highlights of the conference included meeting Robb Fraley, World Food Prize Laureate and Executive VP and Chief Technology Officer for Monsanto. As well, students had the opportunity to participate in this year's World Food Prize Award Presentation, which is known as the Nobel Prize for Food and Agriculture. Ultimately, it was an unforgettable experience and Bailey and Ms. Massinon would like to thank Agriculture in the Classroom Manitoba for presenting them with the opportunity, as well as Monsanto, Viterra and Manitoba Corn Growers for providing sponsorship dollars.

Safe Workers of Tomorrow
Carman Collegiate is pleased to welcome back the Safe Workers of Tomorrow organization. All grade 11 students will take part in the SWoT training that will take place for half of the class on Wednesday, October 14 and the other half on Thursday, October 15. During the training, students will be involved in a morning classroom session discussing employee rights, and then in the afternoon our students will travel to a business in town and conduct a safety audit of that business. They then return to the school and discuss their findings.
The highest rate of injuries in our workforce involve employees from the ages of 16 to 24. The SWoT training is meant to make employees aware of their rights, be able to better recognize dangers and the consequences that can result from dangerous work, and therefore keep our youth safer.
The SWoT will also be presenting to our grade 9 students on Thursday morning. This is a lead up to the Take Your Kids to Work that will be taking place on Wednesday, November 4. Grade 9 parents should have received information regarding this day.

Great Start for the Philanthropy Group
The showing of Minions last night brought in over 120 people. Over the three movie nights hosted the last three weeks (Inside Out, Ant Man, Minions), total attendance has been 325. This puts the Youth in Philanthropy well ahead of target for their fundraising goals. There has been an increased number of students becoming involved in the Philanthropy group as well.
A big thank you to the Graduation Class of 2015, who donated $560 to the Philanthropy group. This is the groups first official significant contribution to the fund from outside the fundraising group. The Youth in Philanthropy connection to the Carman Area Foundation continues to be strengthened, and the CAF promotion and support of this group is much appreciated.
Thank you to all who have attended movies, and offered their support.

The evening started with coaches from all the teams awarding their team's MVP and Coaches' Awards. This was followed by dinner. Mr. Shindle then presented the major athletic awards for the year.

We started with a new category of Scholastic Athletes. All students participating on three or more school athletic teams and holding an 80% or greater average received certificates of accomplishment. The Carman Collegiate Scholastic Athlete of the Year was then presented to Jay Ort. Jay was involved in Cross Country, Track, and Badminton while maintaining an above 95% academic average. Jay will be attending the University of Tulsa next year to continue with his Cross Country Running while taking Chemical Engineering.

The female and male athletes of the year were then awarded. A points model is used based on number of sports, number of tournament, zone, or provincial MVP awards, and number of times on teams that win zones or provincials. Based on the following criteria, the recipients were:

The evening then ended with the presentation of MHSAA Provincial Certificates of all students who went to provincials. June So Soon
Our June So Soon Celebrations took place on Friday. Finally, a warm sunny day at the beach. It has been many years since our students have been able to brave the waters at Colert Beach. Our day started with an entertainment assembly, and the Beverly Ens Memorial Award and School Spirit Awards were presented.
The Beverly Ens Memorial Award is presented to the past presidents of the student council. Beverly Ens was the Carman Collegiate Student Council president when she was involved in a fatal car accident in 1984. The award is in appreciation on the work done and sacrifices made to give all students an enjoyable school experience. Our 2014-2015 school presidents put in a huge number of hours planning, setting up, and participating in events. Not only did they plan, they were full participants. Mrs. Larisa Ens present the award to Mason M and Dane N.
The School Spirit Award was first presented in 1966. The school spirit award is presented to the student or students who contribute behind the scenes and without thought of reward, has a cooperative attitude with both their peers and staff, demonstrates a genuine concern for others, and has a positive “lets get things done” outlook. The nominees were: Tessa B, Allan C, Riley C, Maddi G W, Caitlin H, Nikki J, Amanda M, Mason M, Vanessa M, Dane N, Emily P, Addi P, Jordan R, Maddi S, and Lina L S.
Our recipients were involved in student council, sporting teams, helping to coach, score keep, set up, document banners, helping with Cheerboard, involved philanthropy group, and many other activities. Congratulations to this year’s recipients of the School Spirit Awards – Maddi G W and Mason M.
Student Council then fed all the student lunch before we bussed our students to Colert Beach. A great day was had by all.
One Last Family Movie Night
On Friday June 19th we will be showing “Cinderella” in the Carman Collegiate Community Theatre at 7:00 pm. For the first time ever, this movie night will be a costume party. Children and parents are invited to dress up as their favourite characters from the movie or any other costume you so desire. We are expecting a high volume of princes and princesses in attendance. As always, cost is $5.00 per person or $15.00 per family and there will be popcorn, water, and a variety of candy for sale. There will also be door prizes and special prizes for anyone who is in costume.
Proceeds will be used during the 2015-16 granting season.
